Default first time fly fishing

for the past month i have been out in my yard practicing all kinds of casts. my friends father that has been a avid fly fisherman for years says he thinks im getting it and im ready for the water. here's my questions. ive never fly fished before. and im choosing the john day over the weekend with some family near mitchell. reading recent reports online i've been lead to beleive i have a decent chance at hooking into some steelies near there. here's my questions. so what kinda flys would i want to take with me? i got a whole collection of globugs and skunks and egg sucking leeches so far. anything else? any advice would be very much appreciated. thanks!

I'm not that familiar with the JD for steelies but the black and purple leach patterns seam almost universal... I tie them with a little bit of flash material just for some attracting color.

Good luck.

Any of those flies will work. Just pick one like the skunk and fish it with confidence. As you will discover there's nothing quite like the thrill of a good fish aggressively talking your fly
