Dock Dogs @ Sportsman Show
OK, who's playing? Anyone done this before? Anyone going to have their dog do this? Anyone for the first time, unrehearsed - going in cold?

Re: Dock Dogs @ Sportsman Show
Have your dog run down a length of dock and launch iteslf at the end of the dock, through the air for a retrieve - longest leap wins and may get to go on to other competitions - part of ESPN's outdoor games.

Re: Dock Dogs @ Sportsman Show
I'm entering my dog. It should be a lot of fun for the both of us. When he was a year old he could really fly, but now he's about 90 lbs. So anyway, it should be good for some laughs. And duck season is over, so he needs something to do.

I registered for saturday at 3 p.m., I also registered at 11 p.m. on the registration sheet. Because I think that it's an error. Should be a.m. I'll have to call and find out.

Re: Dock Dogs @ Sportsman Show
Did you pre-register your dog? How do you do that?
Thanks

Re: Dock Dogs @ Sportsman Show
Sheesh! After watching the news last night, I should have registered my pooch. I decided to bag it because I didn't know exactly when I'd be going to the show....anyone out there do this? If so How did your dog do? I saw one dog on the enws that seemed to do pretty well, but others....

Re: Dock Dogs @ Sportsman Show
Wednesday I saw a border collie do about 17' at the show.
I have a Blue Heeler that gets big air jumping after frisbee's, and loves to swim. But I have never tried it off a dock. She'll happily jump in the river and swim after a tennis ball.
Looks like it would be a ton of fun!

Re: Dock Dogs @ Sportsman Show
The show on ESPN was a hoot. The best was the part poodle that decided to sit down at the end of the dock. The owner didn't stop and ended up in the water.
The Oregonian, this morning, said there is a border collie that is on the circuit that does 20' to 21' by the end of the competitions.

Re: Dock Dogs @ Sportsman Show
Sorry, I was just trying to picture my golden "jumping" off a dock. I've occassionally gotten him to slide off the end of one, but jump?
Mind you, this is a dog who will stand in a frozen pond just to be in the water and I have pictures of him climbing in and out of a 5 gallon bucket at 7 weeks old. And he'll stick his head under to pick up a rock. But diving, nope.

Re: Dock Dogs @ Sportsman Show
I went yesterday and watched a few dogs jump. Nothing too spectacular. Makes me want to take my 5 mo old pup out, but I don't know if he would ever jump. Some dogs didn't last night. Plus, with all of those people around, and other dogs, I don't think I could get him to sit still.
ORS,
You should definitely one of your dogs out there. It's really low stress, not really all that competitive. I think alot of people just bring em out there to see what they'll do.

Re: Dock Dogs @ Sportsman Show
My little buddy (90lb lab) will be competing Saturday in the 11:00 event.
We always use to do dock jumping... he loves it. Then one day we saw some dogs on TV doing this in competition! I thought... wow, they stole my idea!

Re: Dock Dogs @ Sportsman Show
We were the 8th best jump for the 11:00 event with a little over 16 feet. Our practice jump was 18'...
Not good enough for the finals on Sunday but it was a blast.

Re: Dock Dogs @ Sportsman Show
When I was teaching my lab to do this I had a funny thing happen. We were at a local lake on a brisk fall day. My wife had walked ahead to use the restroom and left us to "play".
I would position Belle at the begining of the ramp and make her sit, then move towards the end. At this point I would call for her while shuffling along the end of the dock encouraging her, then launch the stick at the last moment. Well, on the "last" jump I stepped off the freakin' dock with my leading foot and went arse over tea kettle into the drink.
Belle thought this was a great new twist to the game and proceeded to jump on my head. My wife shows up about the time a small crowd is gathering and laughing. She, as she has had to many times before, just shook her head in utter disbelief.
It was a chilly walk back to the truck.

D/F - did that happen to be that young yellow lab that a kid was handling? That one cracked me up!
