Big Band Era & Old Timers
Just as the big band era is a thing of the past and only remembered as the good old days so, to soon will be the old timers on the river that are there today. What a loss to us all.
I fished with this old timer (Ron) today and watched him catch a wonderful Steelhead. He smiled just as big as he did when he caught his first fish.
Old timers still have their same friends they grew up with. Do you? Old timers remember when a 20+ fish day was common. Do you?
The best thing about an old timer is " NO BULL "
They can read you like a book. If your fony they laugh at you. If your genuine they share and spill their hearts and knowledge to you for endless hours.
My kids think I'm an old timer but to you and I 37 is still young.
Thank you, everyone one of you old timers that took the time to teach me something new. Fishing or not...............................

Re: Big Band Era & Old Timers
rpnsteelheadlps,
I'm with you. I got a spot where I fish and their is an old timer named Bill. Bill is one good fisherman. He always is catching fish when others are not. What I enjoy about these Men/Women is that no-matter-what, they are always willing to share a secret or two. Bill often will put his rod down and show a new guy how to fish the hole. he always is cheerfull and happy. Two years ago he lost his wife, his fishing partner. He does not frequent the spot too much these days but when he does i stop everything and visit. i will miss him when he is gone and just wish( somewhere deep inside) that i am this generous when i am his age.
Thank you Bill for all the advice.

Re: Big Band Era & Old Timers
RPN,
Big Band can still be found! Oaks Park every other Sunday....Burgie Crandall's Let's Dance Band....16 piece big band and lots of great music!
I had to cut my fishing day a bit shorter than usual yesterday so I could go listen to them.
As far as the old timers, I hear ya! I spent time on the Trask yesterday and a couple of the last living legends in Tillamook were there. Both of them in their late 70's. I spent almost as much time listening to their stories as I did fishing. There are many great lessons to be learned from them and I could listen to them all day long. Heck, then too, I'm not that young myself! Those guys are just old enough to be my dad. I enjoy fishing that spot as much for the company of the old timers as I do the fishing.
Here's to the old timers.

Re: Big Band Era & Old Timers
There will always be old-timers, and someday we will be them. God bless 'em, I love talking to the old-timers at Paulina Lake, or wherever! If you want the low-down fishing report, you find an old-timer.
My son is in the high school jazz band, there is always a "big band" number in their repertoire (pardon my French) and it always brings down the house. Just like rock'n'roll, big band jazz will never die. Quality lasts!

Re: Big Band Era & Old Timers
My question is will the old timers of tomorrow be 1/10 as valuable as the old timers of today?

Re: Big Band Era & Old Timers
Old timers will always be a treasure...
I remember that in about 1985 or so...I had the opportunity to speak with a 107 year old fella at the VA hosp in Portland...he was ridden with the Rough Riders and Teddy when he was 17 or 18 years old or so...he had memories to share that were worth a lot more than a story in a text.
I also remember meeting my great grand parents when I was very young...don't remember that they said much to me...but they were very very old...they were born before the end of the American Civil War...and the thought of that really compresses history for me...helps me to feel contected to it all...by a shorter thread than I had imagined the connection to be. They spoke directly to the men who voted for or against Lincoln, and those who were on the fields of Gettysburg.

Re: Big Band Era & Old Timers
I still fish with today..someone i thought was an "old timer" back when i was in my 20's,(RON) Matter of fact that's how i learned the Sandy. Sometimes we sit there and talk about who has passed and how we remember them. There is alot of who i consider Old timeers that fish the Columbia that i would anchor up too that are getting up there and not in that good of health...I thank them for All they have taught me.

Re: Big Band Era & Old Timers
In my younger days of fishing i thought it was good to keep secrets . As i have gotten more mature i found out that the more that i would share with people the more that i would learn and i would feel a whole lot better about myself .I enjoy see other people catch fish now allmost as much as i enjoy catching them .I allways enjoy getting out in GODS creation and it!s not as important to catch fish to have a great time .
I!m more relaxed , doin!t work at it as hard but seem to catch as many or more than i use to .
