Calcuttas have a forged frame and in general Catalas have die cast frames and one more bearing and a slightly faster gear ratio. You can do your own comparison at their website. I used a catala for a day once and didn't have any trouble. Actually was quite pleased with the performance and found it to be quite smooth. I didn't see much difference to my comparable calcutta.... just my $.02 worth....

Cardiff reels also have the die cast frames, but have the same number of bearings. The quality of the bearings may differ, however.
