Messing with squirrels.
I feed the birds and the squirrels but I make the squirrels work for their food. I take a 3/16 metal rod about four feet long. Bend one end 15 or 20 degree's long enough to hold a ear of corn. So, what I have is a straight rod three and a half foot then it bends to hold the corn, very spring like. I take rod and stick it in the ground with the corn a couple feet above the ground, just out of a large squirrel reach without jumping. When he jumps and grabs the ear its like he's on a bucking bull. Throws him off half the time, its a real kick watching and it keeps him occupied and not working on getting in the bird feeders. To add a challenge (we all need a challenge )to the little critters, I attach the corn so it spins...funny.
To much time on my hands,
Pat

Re: Messing with squirrels.
We feed ours peanuts by hand. They can be a pest in the bird feeders..

Ooops, I thought this was going to be a Hogmaster story. I started laughing, like Homer, just thinking what Hog would write about messing with squirrels....

Pat --- You need to design some more of those cool gadgets. You obviously have too much time on your hands.

Re: Messing with squirrels.
My uncle who is an animal guy that loves messing with the squirels used to sneak up to them when they had there back to him while on the bird feeder. He would give there tails a little tug! Thoes squirls turned into flying squirrls real quick. Now thats what I call stalking skills.

 Is there an all-time record for a thread title which got the most MOD attention in the least elapsed time? This could be the one!

Squirrel fishing, now we have something to do when there are no fish in the rivers. Too funny.

OK, I have the rod and corn. How far up from the ground do you like the bend?

We mix oil, mustard, and cayenne pepper together. It stings their feet but does no damage. This receipe was found on the National Audubon Society Web page. It is very effective.

Re: Messing with squirrels.
Silver, I put the bend at a about three and a half foot then put the rod into the ground about a foot or so, that way the corn is almost within reach of the little critter about two foot off the ground, you need to make him jump so the spring action is in full force when he tries to mount it, yeh haw. Dont make the bend a full 90, about half that or about a 45 degree. Make the rod so it can spin and spring around when he finally gets mounted. I think I might have a sick mind.
I made a top for my bird feeder that lets them almost get to the feeder but when they go that extra effort they can't hold on and to the ground they go, most of the time, to funny. These guys are so persistant, its so much fun trying to give them a challenge in life.
I need a real job,
Pat

Messing with squirrels....
Our cat is fascinated with watching squirrels, but never tries to hurt them. The relationship they've developed is quite interesting to watch!

Re: Messing with squirrels.
A friend showed me an internet clip of a squirrel picking up nuts that led up to a skeet thrower. When the string was pulled he flew out of sight real fast and all you could see of him was a small blur as he came down off in the distance. 2 thumbs up on that one, but then I have a spud-gun so what do I know?
