Methane heats up Tillamook!
South of here, everything is closed, due to ice build up.
North of here, everything is iced up, too!
WHY is Tillamook warm?
COW POOP!
That's right! If you want out of your ice laden area, get some cows!
Organic waste provides the basis for an integrated energy supply!
Anaerobic digestion is the controlled decomposition of organic material in the absence of oxygen. The end products are biogas (methane [50-60%] and carbon dioxide), digestate, organic fibre and water. Biogas can be burned in internal combustion engines to produce electrical power and heat. The biogas yield varies with the quality of material, however animal manure has 4 to 5 times the yield as a similar volume of municipal solid waste.
Every year livestock producers take large quantities of energy and dump it onto their fields. Manure is an energy-rich feedstock, filled with potentially active microorganisms that can be used to produce energy!
Get some cow poop, and warm up! It's a balmy 36 here, compared to your icy 20! Get a clue and get a cow!

Re: Methane heats up Tillamook!
And there's nothing like walking out onto your back porch in the morning with a steaming mug of coffee in your hand. As you greet the morning, taking in a big gulp of fresh morning air, the subtle aroma of cow poop sends you running inside to the oxygen tent. Oh my, never have to trim the ole nose hairs again.

Re: Methane heats up Tillamook!
Growing up around farms all my life, you get used to it.
I would rather have 100 cows then 1 horse just for the smell comparison. Horses smell bad IMHO.

Re: Methane heats up Tillamook!
I'll never forget talking to a dairy farmer down the street one day. Luckily, we don't get the aroma where we live...
I said to him, "Dang, it stinks here!" He returned, "Smells like money to me!"
LOL

Re: Methane heats up Tillamook!
Here's a couple of slogans that I think the Chamber of Commerce should consider for Tillamook County:
"Tillamook--come smell our 'dairy-air'"
ro...
"Tillamook--we put the **** in Dungeness!"
Oh the wonders of methane!!
Wait a minute...I have 4 steers, and my neighbor has 'em--how come it's still below freezing??

Re: Methane heats up Tillamook!
I think we need a newer slogan. I'm tired of those ones. Let's think of a new one!

Re: Methane heats up Tillamook!
I seem to remember a few years ago there was a plan afoot to deal with all the cattle waste. The plan called for a large central waste repository which would turn the methane into electicity. Not sure what happened to the plan, but it seems like a better idea than what is now in place. Pump the poop back into the field untill it rains and goes into the river which flows into the bay. Yum oysters in a delicate cow sause. This is the reason I get my oysters from Netarts Bay.

Cool Texan...good'un!
Mr. Carp...having been around cattle and horses most of my life, to me horse lather and leather actually smell sweet; not sweat but sweet.
Biomass for power...it's a thane thang.

Re: Methane heats up Tillamook!
Worked on a farm/feedlot on summer in college and found that the cow-aroma was not all that bad and actually sort of mollass-like sweet.I think we can all think of something worse.
Also, remember the redistribution or recycling of manure via manure spreader or 'Manure Tea" sprayed on the fields is a great way to use the product. The nutrients go to the grasses which feed the cows. Obviously, an excessive amount of this "organic field enhancer"(don't you just love euphamisms!?) does damage the water quality.

Re: Methane heats up Tillamook!
There is a plant on Port of Tillamook Bay property that is currently turning manure in to compost. Plans for a methane plan are in the works.
If you were long time local like myself, you would know the local slogan. Land of cheese, tree's and cow **** to your knee's.
And yes Jennie, many do consider that the smell of money :depressed: . All the years I worked on dairy farms in Tillamook growing up, not once did I consider that the smell of money.
If you wan't some real fun!!! Go ask one of the local dairy farmers if you can haul manure one day, especially if you have a good wind blowin. Just wait untill you turn the corner and the wind is at your back!!

Re: Methane heats up Tillamook!
Studies show Tillamook is the center of global warming. Be very careful with sparks and open flame when in the area.

Re: Methane heats up Tillamook!
Being a Tillamook native, in high school we always had this saying that Tillamook was
"Cheese, trees, ocean breeze, and cow *&%$ up to your knees"
Apparently it is still accurate.
