Default frozen pipes

I've been out in the 2 foot drifts off and on all night with the hair dryer. Put a heater in the well house--had the pipes with heater tape and covered with foam too. Now the water has stopped again. Boots are starting to leak. Having fun in the snow. Still there are blessings. The house is fairly warm and despite being housebound for a week, there is still food in the fridge and chocolate in the cupboard. Snowing hard here in Clatskanie hills at 9:50 AM--e2

Stay on top of it, the longer you leave it frozen... Well, you know.

Only one more day of this. BTW, I've done the hairdryer trick before, works pretty well. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

I used the heat from my cloths dryer outlet hose once and it worked great! All my pipes under the house was frozen so I ran the hose into a foundation opening. Dryed the cloths at the same time.

I insulated the well house and wired in a light socket and then put in a heat lamp bulb.

I rewired it a couple of times because it was only working intermittenly. It finally dawned on me that it only had power when the pump was running.

Now I just leave the water running in cold weather and haven't had a problem since.

What you would do if you lived where it got cold? Insulate, and bury the pipes 2ft deep coming from the well house. Just put a 100 watt light buld in the pump house and keep it on. Most average size pump houses won't freeze using this method. At least thats what I have experinced over the years. Good luck keeping the water runnning.

Everybody should have a heat gun. Much hotter than a hairdryer, and safer than a torch.

Yup, woke up this morning to the sound of running water myself. I thought, who is taking a shower at this time, especially when there is no school????? Didn't take me long to figure it out. Got pretty lucky though, it'll be a real easy fix.

Yep, yesterday morning I also awoke to the sound of running water , and had a good idea where the problem was. A short section of pipe in my garage that leads to my hose bib out front came apart at the solder joint from the last time it broke. So after an hour of getting the ice off my Bronco, off to Home Depot I went. This time I put a shut off valve in the line so next winter i can shut it off.

Carver,
be careful about condensation with the dryer vent.. (not good for wood joists)
