Default Fly Fishing the Kilchis (NB)

I have heard of the phenomenal chum fishing on the Kilchis and would like to try it out either this weekend or next weekend.

I plan on fishing up near the Park but that's about all I know.

I have a 9'6" 9# Rod and plan on fishing some big ugly flies (probably in Chartreuse).

Any other tips, gotchas, etc?

I wont have a boat, so I'll be 100% bank bound.

thanks

You might want to get some small flies like chum candy and comets as well. Beware of lots of people and keep an eye out for redds. Chums are a blast. Have fun.

The runs of chum salmon on the Miami and Kilchis are severally depressed so please consider not bothering them at all.
You will be doing the fish a big favor.

On second though, I think Maupinate has the right idea on this one. You might want to consider a drive up North for a better chance at fish with runs that are a little less fragile.

Fish for the BRIGHT chums in holes too deep to see the bottom. DO NOT fish for the pasta-finned chums up on the redds.

Use size #2 or so comet-type flies in (primarily) cerise with the rod you mention and you will catch sea-lice covered fish with serious attitude problems.

Bend the point of the hook in toward the shank or use circle hooks to avoid foul-hooking. IF and ONLY IF you use this sort of hook, use a slow, sweeping, sidearm hookset rather than a sharp lift or tug. Use heavy tippet and fight the fish hard.

....???

I would also like to know this. I was planning on doing a trip to the Kilches this week but have been fighting with the ethical issues due to the low numbers. Are there any other reasonable spots in Oregon or do you need to make a trip up to Washington? Thanks--

Please consider not fishing them. They have been harassed and their reds have been stomped. The runs were badly hurt some years ago when it was legal to keep them and people did for the eggs, most people do not like the taste. They have never really recovered well even with a no take rule.

The phenomenal chum fishing you refer to was many years ago. It's over now. There's just remnants left.

Go to the Satsop if it's in shape... there is good access at schafer park and at the slide boat ramp ( you'll see cars parked there) and there is access at the boat launch at highway 12 there will probably also be some bright coho
