Default Coast Guard

I'm proud to announce that Ifish is working with the Coast Guard to make sure you aware on the water. These classes were originally intended for guide boat/charter operators, but we have decided that EVERYONE needs to know.

Here's the latest:

Small Uninspected Passenger Vessels in the Portland, Oregon Zone:
By direction of the
Officer in Charge, Marine Inspection

Dear Boat Owner/Operator:
In preparation for the 2004 operating season, we are promoting a seminar for the Uninspected Passenger Vessel (Six Pack Operator/Guide Boat) to address some new Coast Guard Credentialing Regulations, Marine Casualty Reporting requirements, and Drug and Alcohol Program issues. This will be the first of this type offered by Marine Safety Office Portland OR. With the continual growth of the industry of Guide Boat Operators, we believe this is a crucial and much needed outreach tool for all owners and operators. The following items will be emphasized this year:

• Licensing and Credentialing Requirements (federal and state),
• Drug and Alcohol Program requirements,
• Casualty Reporting Requirements,
• Coast Guard Emergency Rescue and Assistance.

We will provide training and discussion on these items during the seminar, with a question and answer session following each item. We will also have licensing application packages for those in need and handouts to assist in contacting the appropriate agencies.

We have scheduled 5 outreach seminars all scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1p.m. and encourage you to attend the one closest to you:

 March 20, 2004 (Saturday) – Coast Guard Station Coos Bay, OR
 March 21, 2004 (Sunday) – Coast Guard Station Cape Disappointment, Ilwaco, WA
 March 22, 2004 (Monday) – Coast Guard Station Newport, OR
 March 22, 2004 (Monday) – Coast Guard Station Grays Harbor, Westport, WA
 March 28, 2004 (Sunday) – Red Lion Inn Hotel, Lewiston, ID

If you plan to attend please contact the Investigations Department at (503) 240-9309. We also have a new hot tips email box that which may be utilized: hottips@pacnorwest.uscg.mil.

Sincerely,
F. L. GILMORE
Lieutenant, U. S. Coast Guard
Chief, Investigations & Licensing Department
By direction of the
Officer in Charge, Marine Inspection

This looks great! What a compliment to Ifish that the USCG is working with us!

I wish there were a class offered closer to Portland. I bet there would be a lot of interest in the Portland metro area. Ilwaco seems like a long way to go.

OK, here's the deal ... I just called the USCG. They would be happy to put together a Portland class if they get enough interest. If you are interested and would like to attend this class if it is provided in the Portland area, please send an e-mail to hottips@pacnorwest.uscg.mil If there's enough interest, we'll announce it here.

My dad and I recently took the CG Aux two day course. They were a great group to be with and I learned a lot.

I would encourage all Ifishers to take the class and/or have the free CG Aux boat safety inspection (they will come to where ever your boat is parked/moored).

Any one else interested in a Portland class? See my post above about contacting the CG to let them see the level of interest.

I would like to go.
I had trouble passing the boaters safety course. I could use it, and it would probably make me feel safer on the water.
We should make it an ifish event! A time to meet up with people we haven't met yet!
