Rivers Inlet, B.C.
Well my father and I originally planned to head up to Alaska this summer but for what we wanted (Nushagak River)it was a little over our budget. We decided to wait until next year to go to the Nush.
Instead we booked at a resort on Rivers Inlet, B.C. towards the end of August. It sounds like they get some massive chinook up there. The guy said they average around 30 lbs.
We chose a unguided package but they supply the boat and gear. It'll be a plug-cut herring show. Anyone ever been up to Rivers Inlet? I am looking for any feedback or suggestions to make this trip a success.
Thanks in advance...
Jason

Re: Rivers Inlet, B.C.
My father lives on Vancouver Is, and has fished it several times.
To make it a good trip you will want to be there when the fish are there. It is a short run and you have to hit it just right . From my understanding it is around Aug 18th . Last summer I was at the Quatsino sound and talked with a guy that had returned from Rivers and said the fish had already come and gone and this was Aug 12. I also met some guys that had hit it the pervious year and done well with whole Herring . It is great country you will love it . Good luck. id. painter

Re: Rivers Inlet, B.C.
I went there last year at the beginning of August, and will be going again at the same time this year. I also went on an unguided trip, and our group had a great time running our own boats and doing our own thing. The salmon fishing was pretty good, but you couldn't keep Coho. My understanding is that it hasn't been decided yet this year. Pinks were plentiful, and we caught quite a few Kings in the 15-25 lb. range. We used strictly whole anchovies, but I'm not sure if that's because it was the bait of choice, or if it was all the lodge had. I plan on doing more bottom fishing this year, as I only tried for a few hours last year, but had good success.

Re: Rivers Inlet, B.C.
We went up there about 10 years ago. It is one of the prettiest places you could ever go to. The fishing is usually good in August between the Silvers and the Tyee, depends a little on which lodge you booked at since it is a very long channel and they are located in different parts of the inlet. Let me know which one and I might be able to give you some tips on where we found success.

Hey I see you are in Mollala. If you want a kick in the pants before you go, run up to the Oregon City Library and rent the old Rivers Inlet "Fishing the West" episode with Larry Shoenbern (spelling?). They have a lot of his shows on video there for rent and that's a good one. It was 20 years ago and they are all using colored banana weights, but it's still cool to watch.

Re: Rivers Inlet, B.C.
I wonder how late August will be for the Kings after the feedback. I asked the resort host and they said fishing is still very good. Of course what are they going to say..."We don't have any fish, don't come"!???!

Re: Rivers Inlet, B.C.
From what i understand you can catch fish almost always but the run of Tyhee (fish over 30lbs.)is timing dependent. One year my father went a couple days too early and one year he got there just a couple days late. He always caught 30lb fish. But, that isnt a big fish for that run . Most guys say they are after fish in the 50 lb class. Lots of 40 lbers are caught there. id. painter

Re: Rivers Inlet, B.C.
Rivers can be excellent but as others have said, run timing is everything. For best sucess you want to be at the head of the Inlet, up near the river mouths, which is a looong run from the mouth. While fishign can be excellent, this is primarily a trophy fish expirence and as such you should not expect big numbers of fish.
Most guys slow troll big herring. It's not uncommoin to go days without a bite. But the next bite could be 50 or 60 lbs.

Re: Rivers Inlet, B.C.
Went there two years ago and had a great time. Had difficulty with the lodge provided "coffee grinder" reel. If I did it again, I'd take my best 9' - 10' mooching rod with a reel capable of handling up to 60# king! Good luck,
