Way back when... MIDI
What got me into computers in the first place, was learning to compose MIDI on the computer.
I was a classically trained pianist for many years, and wanted to explore the electronic side of a keyboard. I was against it for a very long time, and finally gave in.
Anyway, MIDI has changed so much that my old formats didn't seem to sound good over the net anymore. But, now, all the sudden, they sound OK again in Windows Media!
Here is an arrangement I worked out, of Michelle LaGrande's "What are you doing The Rest of Your Life?"
Click here and upon the prompt, allow windows media.
...and then this Pachabel that I sold for a film soundtrack:
Pachabel's cannon (Mind you, it sounds better on the right instruments!)
Here is a rather blue one... Called Saturday... I was messing around with horn sounds...
and one last, called Ocean
I think some of the instrument codes have been replaced with others, cuz they don't sound the same as when I wrote them, but still, it's better than embedded midi in web pages!
I wish I had the newer software to start again. I have not been playing the piano at all lately. I miss it.
Anyone out there do MIDI?
For a long time, I was writing songs for the rivers that I love. I have several still that need to be converted to the right format to sound at all right, by today's standards. I'd like to finish this project and put them on CD sometime.
My favorite tune was "Nehalem."

Re: Way back when... MIDI
What would be even more fun is to find someone else who has studied with:
Gene Confer
Nellie Tholan
Eddie Weid
Lillian Pettibone
Aurora Underwood
Chris Parker
all keyboard/pianists....
I would love to talk piano lessons with someone!!!

Re: Way back when... MIDI
Musical Instrument Data Interface. yep. messed with it in the early 90s during the Intel 80486 DX2 days and then the division I worked in got close to the silicon suppliers of the components as the Pentium emerged.
MIDI still has legs, most films use it instead of orchestra, and the new polyponic phones are using MIDI to play those cool ring tones, such as songs etc...
I have had a couple MIDI kbs and did some basic compositions. On the technology side I was into it... as an artist..I sucked.

Re: Way back when... MIDI
Use MIDI all the time. I play keyboards in the church worship band. Don't do much composing, although I have used Cakewalk and/or a hardware sequencer to do music for weddings and funerals.
I don't have a sound card on my computer here at work. Can hardly wait to hear what you have done

Re: Way back when... MIDI
It's music instrument DIGITAL interface, actually.
I used Cakewalk for these... My Cakewalk program, however, is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy out of date, and Kilchis chewed my MIDI cables, when he was a pup. Still haven't replaced them!

Re: Way back when... MIDI
What keyboards do you use? I currently use a Kurzweil K-1000 (upgraded several times and still my favorite), along with an Alesis Keyboard, and a Roland rack mount synth, along with other various signal processors and a MIDI voice harmony unit. (Pastor Dave needs all the help he can get with his singing)

Re: Way back when... MIDI
I have an Ensoniq KT 88 ... I used to use it gigging.
I haven't hooked it up in ages.
Nor, have I touched the piano. :depressed:
I don't know what is going on! It's just been so long since I have felt the urge to play.

Re: Way back when... MIDI
You just need a "pick-me-up". Dust that thing off and play and sing some beautiful worship music. The motivation will come right back to you

Re: Way back when... MIDI
A lot of the newer cellphones can upload midi files for ring tones! So you can create your own ring otne if you want.
