I CAME UP WITH A IDEA THAT I WOULD LIKE PATENT AND IM LOOKING FOR SOME SUGGESTIONS FROM SOMEONE WHO HAS SOME EXPERENCE IN THIS? THANKS FOR STOPING IN. BY THE WAY THE SANDY IS PICKING UP. WE PICKED UP ONE NATIVE YESTERDAY IN THE LOWER RIVER AND HEARD OF ALOT OF OTHER FISH BEING PULLED OUT.

Anyway...randall, while I have not filed a patent up till now, I know the process is fairly simple and automated online. There are certain steps which must be taken though, basically doing your homework to see what prior art exists, how your idea is different from those, etc.

Just go to the patent office web site and follow the instructions. Will probably take you 6-8 hours to complete the filing process, but if your idea is really good, its worth it.

Get a patent attorney's advice, here's one that I've used, Steven Ford at 503-222-2613 he'll give you a hour free explaining the process. I would recommend not doing it on line or by yourself. You need a Utility patent to protect the idea from the masses anything less is not worth the effort or money that it takes to get one. You might want to go over to the law school in Lake Oswego and search the patent and trademark micro film files to see if the idea might already been thought of...its free to do this and very interesting. A trade mark is sometimes more important than a patent and its much less expensive.
