Mad as heck. Aint going to take it no more
I figured Jen and Mods needed a diversion from those telling them how to run their board....
They do a great job and I appreciate them all.
But here's what has me in a tizzy.....
I got a new digital camera back in Nov. and ever since have tried to upload pictures with no success.
I have down sized my pics. I have tried a zip file. I have downloaded onto a floppy.
I have tried to upload directly from the camera.
It don't work.
It seems the problem may be at step #3 of the instructions as once I have accesed the proper file in my computer and click on "open", it does not open.
Might this be where I am breaking down?
Please help!
Picless in GP.

Re: Mad as heck. Aint going to take it no more
I assume you are having troubles getting uploads to ifish and not uploading to your 'puter?
I have noticed oddities lately uploading. I get and error once I punch the Upload button. Error 18 or something, do you want to debug. And I Hit No, and nothing,,,BUT, if I do it twice in a row I still get the error the second time, and the picture loads anyway on the second try ??. I have put limited time into this, and tried to re-upload some pics I have in the past. They seem to work fine. The differences.... I am now on XP, and a new notebook.
One problem I once had was file name length, but and the directory structure. I moved a temp file to the root and kept all the pics 8 charaters or less (legacy stuff). That worked way back then, but now I don't think it is required.

Re: Mad as heck. Aint going to take it no more
The two most common problems are having the picture buried too far in folders and more than 8 characters in the picture name. I have a folder in my root directery that I use for uploading pictures. Its just c:/TempPics. I move copies there to download. The name thing is a bugger sometimes. Stay away from anything except letters and you can't have any blank spaces. I also just put the picture name in the box that says "description". I've had problems when I try to add any more than that. You have to be fairly clever with the picture name also because if somebody else has a picture with that name already on the server it won't let you download yours. Also I have less trouble when my pictures are formatted as .JPGs. Pete is the picture Guru so if this is "been there, done that" you might ask him.

Re: Mad as heck. Aint going to take it no more
Also, naming pics with spaces in them... like
my cat.jpg
It has to be a jpg, and not a tiff, bitmap, etc.
It can't be
my@cat.jpg either. No characters except letters.
It can't be, as STG states:
mycatiscuter.jpg
Too many characters!
It can't be over 100 k, either.
What can it be? Perfect, or else!
We are working on a new pic upload for you guys... Just you wait! I've been set back a bit, financially, but soon!

Re: Mad as heck. Aint going to take it no more
I usually put pics on my own web space, then link to them. Saves ifish disk space. The only problem I've had (w/ ifish upload) was the "directory path too long" issue, I just filed them in "C:" can't get shorter than that!
And, what they all said. My photo software seems to default to TIFF format, you always have to specify JPG.

Jen, is the pic upload utility a component of the UBB package? - just curious

Re: Mad as heck. Aint going to take it no more
Ok, I have moved the pic to my hard drive. It is 112KB in size and I have named it frn.
Hit the "open" button, it appears on the upload form browser as c:\pictures\frn.jpg.
Then when I click "upload", nothing happens.
Any ideas?
Thanks for the posted and email help thus far!

Re: Mad as heck. Aint going to take it no more
Straydog, when you click on the "browse" button and the window comes up, instead of selecting the file and clicking "open" just double click on the file instead. then fill in all the other info just as asked in the instructions and click upload. just try. I too had this problem when i wanted to upload pics....and as STG pointed out... I had my folder containing the pics too deep in the system so i created a special folder on my desktop and that path is short enough. I know it's obvious to most..but right click on your desktop and select "NEW" folder.

Re: Mad as heck. Aint going to take it no more
Thank you all for your help!!
By Jove, I think we got it!!!!
I moved the pic to desktop, reduced it down to 87k, did the double click instead of "open" and I believe it is going to appear when I add reply.
If so, this is my backyard before the rains got the creek going strong again.

Congrats! Great shot, too. I am going to snag it for my desktop for a while (if you don't mind).

YAYAYA!!!
Now, if you only had Paint Shop Pro 8, you could lighten it up, fix the saturation, and export it for the web, ready to go!!

Re: Mad as heck. Aint going to take it no more
Cool!
Actually, I can do some editing on the ACDsee program that came with the camera. I need more time to play with it and learn about it, though.
What a difference!

Re: Mad as heck. Aint going to take it no more
I know! Isn't it incredible? It's so pretty!
PSP has this feature that is called one touch photo, or something like that, and it does several processes. It almost always improves the photo. I'm getting spoiled using it.
Then, it has an "Export as jpg" feature that crunches it. It has a preview pane, so you can see when you have crunched it too much. It's so nice. What a breeze! If everyone bought PSP, I'd be willing to do a short tutorial.
