Default Transom Trough - Plug it up or not?

I have a 1964 Glasmaster Runabout. It has a self bailing transom trough in the back. When water from backing or a back draft comes into the trough it scares the pee wad out of my son, and occasionally myself. By plugging these two holes it would give about 6" more free board on the rear end.

Would it be safe or not to plug these two holes?

Buy and install some flap type scuppers so they can still drain but if it were me I would not plug them.

Plug em. They are doing nothing but draining what looks like 1" of water in that tray. Anything else that comes over that back is going in the boat anyway. If you do take some over the transom, then you can just pull the plug and drain the 1 gallon sitting on the tray, then put the plug back in.

More dangerous with them open than closed.

I agree with ORGA. I always plug mine when launching and if the water is splashing into the holes. If I get water in the well from a rain or snow shower, I will remove the plugs to drain the area. Plug'em

Before you plug the holes answer one question if that well is full of water will it affect the way your boat handles? If it won't hold enough water to make a difference plug it.
