Ford PU Trouble Shooting
I would really appreciate any input that someone could offer as to what may be the problem with my pu.
I have an 89 F250 4x4 5 speed with a 460 motor in it. The truck has about 90,000 miles on it and has always been maintained and has never had a significant problem. The symptoms are simple. When the truck is cold it starts easy, one or two cranks and it turns over great. If I drive that truck to lets say Sauvie Island and turn of the engine in line and set for half an hour, when I go to start it again it just cranks and cranks and cranks. Same thing at like the gas station or grocery store. But if I leave it for a couple of hours and the motor cools down it will again start immediately.
Please help me out with a few ideas or maybe a good trouble shooting website. Thanks friends.

Re: Ford PU Trouble Shooting
http://www.ford-trucks.com/ check this one out. good luck. I'm no mechanic but I might start with the fuel pump. I had a truck once that did the same thing (different brand) I carried a gallon of water along to pour some on the fuel pump if hot... vapor lock scenerio until I could afford to replace. zip

Re: Ford PU Trouble Shooting
Or...You might try an "Ignition Module"..they usually fail when they get warm or hot, then work O.K. when they cool down.
Eventually, they'll fail for good. That's what I'd start with.

Re: Ford PU Trouble Shooting
I second the ignition module inside the distributor. Pull it off and take it to NAPA, they can test it several times, therefore heating it up, and see if that fixes it. Secondly check the ignition switch on the column.... Either way they are not that expensive to replace, might just buy another one...just my .02

Re: Ford PU Trouble Shooting
I'm assuming it's an EEC-IV TFI ignition, so scan it for codes. Don't waste your money by throwing parts at it.
I could be the TFI module on the side of the distributor, but when they quit, they usually quit, and that's it. And they're not super cheap-- maybe $40 for a generic.
It could also be your air bypass valve or quite a few other things.
The fuel pump is in-tank, so you can't get to it without dropping the tank, which is a major pain.

Re: Ford PU Trouble Shooting
It is a Ford! Enough said.
First thing I would try is selling it and buying a Chevy.
That usually clears up most problems.

Re: Ford PU Trouble Shooting
It could also be the crank sensor. I had one that caused hard starting & stalling once it warmed up! Turns out it was a defective replacement part.

Re: Ford PU Trouble Shooting
I also vote for the ignition module. My truck did the same thing and finally gave up.

Re: Ford PU Trouble Shooting
get a can of starter fluid and give it a shot,if it starts then dies. Then you have a fuel problem. If it does not start then you have an electrical problem, check for spark.
