What a great Christmas present for US Soldiers. A great victory for US and Coalition forces. I can not believe that he was captured, let alone alive. Of all of the major battles throughout US history how many high leaders has our millitary captured, without surrender.
The 4th ID is from Ft Hood TX where I am stationed and the barracks that we are housed in belong to the soldiers responsible for the capture.
I was woke up at approximately 0600 this morning, by a commotion outside my room. I saw most of the guys in my platoon running for the day room, where the TV is, in their underwear. I followed and crowded in the room and around the TV, still not awake to hear the news of his capture. There is a general feeling of elation within the company. We are uncertian how this will affect our mission, but we remain vigilant in our tasks and training.
My concern about Saddam's capture is the potential for kidnappings of US citizens for the release of Saddam. I fear that as long as he is alive, his followers will attempt, at no avail to have him released and returned to power.
This is a milestone for middle-eastern citizens, a democracy in the birth. Freedom is not a dream anymore, rather a reality. I am proud to be a part of this historic moment, and can not wait to see how the Iraqi people react to this freedom.
