Re: LP's to CD's
I have a program called Adobe Audition. It's a multitrack recorder for your computer and it's kind of expensive at $299, but it records the tape or the record from your turntable through a preamp into your sound card and into a file.
From there you can take out the pops and snaps from scratches and static, filter out noise like crackle, tape hiss etc. and end up with a clean like new wave or mp3 file. There is software that costs less, but this one works well.
Your computer should have a sound recorder in it's sound card software that will record it to a wave file. It probably doesn't have any editing capabilities, but you should be able to get it to your computer relatively easily and at no cost.
Having it done for you is a very labor intensive job and would probably cost more to convert your album or tape than a new cd would cost (to do it right). My dad had a small collection converted to wave, they charged him more than $299 and didn't even clean up the recordings.
If you have a bunch of albums or tapes, you're better off to buy the software and learn how to use it. I've got hundreds of albums that I'm putting on disk. I'm working on old christmas albums right now.

Re: LP's to CD's
Wow,
I was just thinking about this today!!! I have boxes of old stuff that goes back to the 50's, some of it I'd like to get on CD for listening and/or presents to my parents.
I didn't even think this was possible, technophobe that I am. $299??? Uh, can I borrow it???

Re: LP's to CD's
I am hoping to find a business that could do this for me, as I don't have the equipment or the computer sauvy to get the job done right.

Re: LP's to CD's
I've been wondering about this as well. My biggest concern is getting the noise edited out.
I gotta find an old turntable as well. This sounds like a good start.

Re: LP's to CD's
I am amazed at how much noise you can remove from old scratched records. Virtually eliminates all noise except worn grooves in LP's. If the highs are gone, they aren't coming back. As far as pop's and crackles and identifiable noises, they disappear. It's not that hard to do with the right filters and plenty of time.

Re: LP's to CD's
I have a program called "MusicMatch" you can copy LP's to CD with it. I have tried it a couple of times, but I think with the time it takes to get the albums copied to the hard drive and then to get the noise out, its easier just to go and buy the CD. I guess if you just wanted to copy selected tracks to make a "favorites" CD, it would be worth the trouble. I think the program cost around $70.

Re: LP's to CD's
Cool,
I have boxes of stuff from my parents era that I grew up on and would love to record on CD.
OK old timers...Kingston Trio, Highwaymen, Dick and Dee Dee which is autographed, NEW Christy Minstrels, Jonny Horton, Billy Vaughn, Telstar!!!, old Smothers Brothers stuff, Hatari!, Four Preps, Word Jazz, An American in Paris LP. The list goes on. I have three orange boxes of this stuff my old man was going to toss but I kept it just in case.
Heh, heh, forgot to mention my matchbox collection of cars dating back to the late 60's thru the 80's, several of which were ordered from the UK because you could not buy them in the states........
