Default Merc 240EFI Sport Jet Speed

I recently purchased a 2004 21' Boice Response with a 2003 Merc 240EFI Sport Jet and according to my GPS I can reach a top speed of 36 MPH. This seems slow to me as I have read of similar boats with the Merc 175 Sport Jet hitting a 48 to 50 MPH top speed. Anyone with any personal experience with the top speed you can expect to attain with the Merc 240EFI Sport Jet in this type boat?

I could do 50mph (on the GPS) on still water with my 175SJ. This is in a 21ft Weldcraft and it was before a good part of the McKenzie, Santiam and Willamette River bottoms went through the pump. Not to mention sand from different bay bottoms being sucked through the pump as well. Now about all I get is 40 or maybe 42 out of it. But I almost never run it that hard because of the gas it gulps.

Long story short, I know the impellor needs to be rebuilt and the wear ring replaced. Once that's done I'm confident my boat can do 50mph again.

You should be able to do 50 or a scosh more with your 240, depending on your load.

Oh, and since it's your first post you gotta tell a little introductory story. Otherwise you'll never hear the end of it.

Twitch's 20 ft TJ with a 240 would run around 50.

Thanks for the posts. They confirm my thought that it should go faster on top end (and like Baitsauce I don't plan to run it that hard anyway) and now I can get to work to understand why it is only hitting 36. Now for some personal info for Baitsauce. I used to be 18 but now I'm 61! I have worked in the same industry now for 43 years and I am lucky enough to live in Crescent City in Northern, CA in the heart of some of the greatest fishing on the west coast and just 80 miles north of Arcata where I was raised (I was born in Myrtle Creek, OR so they can't keep me out of OR). I have a son 8 years old and a daughter 5 years old (no accidents either) and one of the main reason I bought the boat was to spend as much time with my family as possible (I'm lucky, my wife loves the boat!). This is my first boat although I have wanted one for a long time and in particular I wanted a Boice because I like the look, the performance, the history (legal and illegal) and the fact only about 300+ Boices were built before the company was shut down. And, I got this one for a great price from a really nice fisherman. I am interested in using the boat for a wide variety of activities not just fishing. I got intersted in these jets when I started taking customers out fishing with a hired guide on the Rogue river (that's where I saw my first Boice in about 2002 - 2003). I also hunt and in fact just finished cutting up a nice 4x4 Blacktail buck I shot over in Trinity county on Sunday (I skipped church with the approval of my wife and I guess God since he let me get this very nice buck). Anyway I hope that is enough on me and I just can't wait till I become a sardine!. Fishbuck.
