Default Multnomah County Income Tax

What the? I just saw on the news that an income of $41,000 will be paying $450 to multnomah county if you live there. I knew that there was a new tax but this amount is ridiculous. Does this mean that if you make $80,000 you wil be paying $900?

Good grief! I don't know what multnomah county does for me but it sure is not worth the tax that they want to collect.

I live about 50 feet outside the Mult. County Line - whew! What's interesting about this new tax is that Mult Co. claimed that is was going to be distributed to the school districts within Mult. Co. - there are a lot of people, including myself, who live in Clack. Co., but our kids attend schools in Mult Co.

It would be interesting to see the reaction of those who voted for this tax now that they are getting their bill - especially during the holiday season.

A friend of mine once told me "it's a good thing that we don't get as much government as we pay for."

I wouldn't have a problem if all the money went to the schools. In the end I bet at most, ten percent makes it to the schools. The rest goes into the black hole called government.

Just one more reason to get out of Portland and Multnomah County. If Vera and the rest of the stooges had not oppted to finance every special interest group and try to be politically correct on every issue they would not be dipping into our pockets.Look at the stats and see where the money is going,if you have a child in the Portland Public school system, listen to them and you will know where its going.

What I can't believe is that the majority of people in Multnomah county passed this thing. I guess the teachers all need raises.

I guess they're more eager to give away their hard earned money than some of the rest of us.

Whoa!! I opened my paycheck statement today and found a note from my payroll department.
It said that the Multnomah county tax was due in April 2004 and it was my responsibility to pay it as it was not witheld from my paycheck. I took this to mean it was retroactive to 2003. I haven't had a chance to investigate this yet, so before I go completely ballistic can somebody tell me if this is retro for the whole tax year or just part of it?

1.25%. Retro. See all the good news on the Multnomah County website.

The funny thing --- funny peculiar, not funny ha-ha --- is that it applies to income from Oregonians with Washington income, but NOT to Washingtonians with Oregon income.

Lessee --- If you live in Multnomah County your Oregon State tax income rate is 9% + 1.25% + 1% = 11.25%. That is up 2.25%, a 25% increase (!!!) in only one year.

Wonder what the new year will bring.....

Two words...."Sales Tax". Drop the income tax and have a sales tax, then everyone would be paying the same. If you made $20,000 or $20,000,000 you would pay equally. Of course the merchants just over the bridge would lose a lot of customers .

we are planning to move to vancouver. WE HAVE HAD IT. between the portland water dept and the multnomah county income tax we cant afford to live here anymore.. no matter how much water we dont use the bill goes up $40 every time we get it. when i called and asked about it they said they had 2 rate increases in the last year.. my only worry is that nobody is going to want to buy here in portland. .

The only way I would ever vote for a sales tax is if they not only got rid of the other state and local taxes but banned them constitutionally.

Simply getting rid of them is only a guarentee they will be added back in later. Back up to the same level or even higher! Then we will be paying the taxes qwe currently pay plus a sales tax on top.

Instead of "cutting" the projected growth rate of the government... why not actually cut the government back. There is pork out there. I wish the polititions would stop putting kids, the elderly, and fire/police on the chopping block. There are other places to cut... and cut deeply. I always get the feeling the poli's are intentionally hurting 'we the people' by these cuts in order to say "so you won't pay for what we tell you to. See how you like these apples." They cut the programs they know people want kept so that more taxes will be added back in on the next go round.

I truly doubt that most of them have our best interests in mind.

I'm not paying! Got the door barricaded and the cupboards stocked. They'll never take me alive!

Sometimes taxes are necessary. This time it is difficult to swallow especially after watching all the waste. I don't know about any other multnomah county residents but I do not feel any comfort in the fact that I may have to cut an $800 dollar check to multnomah county.

Where is all this money going?

Maybe it's time to move.

Altmonte Springs just north of Orlando FL is a very nice area. Reasonable property prices and just minutes from Orlando.

My favorite is the "if you'd like to pay it early, here's how" message. Thanks, but no thanks. When is the last day to pay? That is the day they will get my money.

And yeah, I voted No on it...and I'll be voting to repeal the state increase.

Bug_Flicker, I'm with you. For years I turned my nose up at WA because I couldn't turn my back on my home state. Other than 2 years in AK I've always lived here.
I'm only human, and can only put up with X amount of abuse. The time has come to bail out of the tri-county area (probably to Columbia or Marion county) or head across the river. I've had it with Metro, PDX, Tri-Met and now the county.

Ask them where the lottery dollars are going? same black hole!!!!! They said we would see school funding from this as well and you seen how far that has gone. I do not live in mult. county but i would be #$@&%$ if I was burdened with this scandal.
