Fiscal ineptitude on the part of our state government is not a good cause, IMHO.

SShheeessshh is right!!

For 50 bucks I get to do all of that fun stuff for a year and have people managing to make my experience the best it can be. Yet I spent that much taking the family to dinner Friday night........... sheeesh, what it costs a guy to buy a bowel movement these days!!

Yeah, it bothered me a little bit how everyone on this site begged the state to raise our fees. We had ifishers marching at the capital holding signs that read "I'll pay more for a license."

I understand that we don't want to see hatcheries go away and access lost but I say before I volunteer to pay more you show me that you can be responsible with what you already have.

That being said $130 for my sports pac licence is still a bargain for all that I get out of it.

I just don't want fisherman and hunters to volunteer to pay more everytime the state threatens to take something away.

The price is too high and they are eventually going to raise the price so high that they will loose revenue. The shellfish tag should be on a Sport Pack too.

I wish I had time to compare Oregon's fees to other state's. I know, one could argue that Oregon is unique with respect to the diverse fish/game opportunities, but there's WA, AK, ID, MT, WY and Northeastern state, about which I know absolutely nothing. Anyone have this data?

Another question - how much is too much? Sure you get to do a lot for the $130. But would you still feel that way if it was $200? How about $500? How about $1000? Where does it end?

Just search for different states fish and game. Just search for Alaska or Maine department of fish and game and they will come up.

I'm in the same boat (proverbial boat, because I really don't have one) as the rest of you. I'll spend $130.00 this year, but its probably the best bargain I get for any other $130.00 I'll spend. Okay, $260.00 because my spousal unit also hunts & fishes.

Straydog's right.

My license fees are the smallest cost I incur feeding this addiction called fishing. Gas, food, rods, reels, lures, and even line can end up costing more than a year's fishing license.

We cringe at $50 for a year-long license (about $4 a month) then think nothing of stopping on the way home for a burger and a brew that ends up costing twice the monthly fishing tariff. Ever lose a kwickfish? That's about a month and a half's worth of license cost right there.

The license is the cheap part.

When I lived in Alaska we were able to harvest:
6 deer, 4-10 caribou, 2 black bear, 2 mountain goat and 1 moose per year as well as 2 halibut and 26 salmon per day (2 kings and 6 each for the other 4 species). All this for $50.00. The price has gone up some since '99 but it still isn't that bad.

I don't have the figures, but I recall that there was info posted on the ODFW website a long time ago when this issue first came up. Oregon's fees, compared to Washington, California, Idaho, Nevada, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, etc. were consistently among the lowest and many times THE lowest of the western states.

Be that as it may, I am happy to pay the higher fees for the tags/licenses. We can't have hatchery fish in the rivers or management of our deer/elk/pronghorn herds without field staff. The ODFW is certainly not perfect, but can anyone think of who could do a better job of raising fish and managing game animals?

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">I obviously don't know all there is to know about this, but I'm sure somone does - and I'm sure they'd be more than willing to educate me on this  . I would be interested in seeing exactly how the money from licenses and tags are appropariate and how much goes into the general koffers.

I don't mind paying to play, but it seems that the ODFW often takes the easy route of hiking prices instead of being more creative. For example, maybe offering a 3-day small game lisence for non residents, much like WA.

And with 4 kids who like to hunt and fish, sheesh! (in the words of others on this thread) The ODFW is making a killing on me and my family. They should offer discounted family packs too  - oh, but that would be unfair to those without families.

Well I dont mind paying for fees, especially the shellfish license because I will use that the most, and I do realize Oregon is a bargain compared to some other state fees...........but a 20-30% price hike in one year? If this continues in only a few years it will be $100 not $50. No doubt the high raise is because of the budget woes but it should be spread out more imo

Is this the price for the tag and license, or just for the license alone.

Thanks

My understanding, which may not be correct or complete, is that NONE of the money from license/tag fees goes to the general fund. It all goes back to ODFW's own budget.

It seems like there was a push to borrow $$ from ODFW's license/tag sales to help schools recently, but that it was shot down. Anybody know for sure?
