Re: Sturgeon
For Keepers I use a Rainshadow SWS597 15-30# 7'10" Rod is very capable and I've used it on everything. Pulling divers at B10, Keeper Sturgeon, Tuna live bait, near shore bottom fishing, ocean salmon

Re: Sturgeon
Let me introduce Kerry Hansen because I know that he will not do it. Kerry is one of the pioneers in custom rod building. He has been at it a long time and does beautiful work. He developed his own loom and was one of the first if not the first to do weaving on a rod. He is certainly the first that I saw and was impressed by many years ago. His weaving has been featured numerous times in every rod building magazine and reference source associated with custom rod building.
In addition to that he is a really nice guy who helps other custom rod builders any time that he can and is not constantly attempting to get the recognition that some others seem to crave.
He gives presentations at the Custom Rod Builders get together at Lamiglas each spring and if you are interested in weaving his presentation is a must and is very interesting and worth sitting in on even if you are not going to be doing any weaving.

Re: Sturgeon
Emory, you almost make me blush, Thanks for the kind comments. I invite all to attend the Lamiglass seminar held each year around the first week-end in April. It is for all levels of rod builders and has a lot of great guys who go out of their way to answer all questions at all levels. there are no entrance fees. They have a potluck at the end of the second day and they ask people if they can, to bring something or if you can't to donate a little to help pay for some of the stuff that has to be purchased. Lamiglas really opens their doors to us and also allow a number attendees to build their own blank. Emory is the most knowledgeable guy I know on the physics and material science of the blank and is a contributor each year helping all comers to understand how the blank/rod performs and how you affect it's performance when you add components to the blank.
The reason why I asked if the Sturgeon rod was to be fished from shore or a boat, is because I was going to give you my thoughts on a boat Sturgeon rod.
Now I am going thru a learning curve in operating on this site so bear with me.
Kerry

Re: Sturgeon
mtalmadgeoregon I will be glad to meet you. As I said there are a bunch of knowledgable guys there to pick their brains. Lamiglas generally has blanks there to buy at a good price. There will also be a multiple item no cost raffle at the end. Contact KENDRA at Lamiglas and she will keep you informed as well as sending you Lodging information. They usually have a BYOB (not bring your own bottle ;>)) on a first come first served basis at a small fee for materials to build your own blank. They will give you a choice of a Fly, Steelhead, casting (don't remember exactly) and those that have never built a blank get first shot. They truely are nice people and a great company.

Re: Sturgeon
If you get a chance to build a blank - take advantage of the learning opportunity.

Re: Sturgeon
Hi Kerry - I am really curious to hear what your thoughts are on a good boat rod for Sturgeon. I have built a several rods from Angler's Workshop, and now (finally) have a boat and can go after Sturgeon. What do you like/recommend?

Re: Sturgeon
I like a composite rod blank so the tip is soft to flex when the wind is bouncing the boat arround and the graphite gives you plenty of backbone without being so heavy. I would also build it in a spiral wrap configuration to help you when fighting the fish. Mine are 20 - 50 Lb 7' blanks. The softer tip also help when fighting the fish because the bend gives you a shorter moment arm therefore giving you a little advantge. The softer tip won't jerk the sinker on the bottom as much which also helps you from having so much slack in the line.
