Default Kokanee in Cougar Creek

Made a trip to Merwin, Yale and Swift today. Not to fish, but I did take my pole along. Need to get out of the house (cabin fever). Stopped at Cougar Creek to check the many red kokanee moving upstream. Now is the time to go and see all the kokanee you missed last summer.

Thanks for the pictures. I think now I might go this weekend to view spawning kokanee.

Cougar Creek is in Cougar Washington. Just about 20 miles east of Woodland, Washington.

I decided to take my son up to Cougar Creek this weekend to check out the spawning kokanee. We're fortunate to live pretty close and caught our fair share of fish this summer from Merwin & Yale. I thought it would be good to teach him a little about the life cycle of the fish and realize it's not just about catching them all the time.

Here's a couple that already finished the deed......

Nice photos 6wapiti6.

Here are a couple from Sheeps Bridge on the Deschutes arm of Wickiup. The fish were spread fairly evenly over a large area. The first pictures is a few fish that were right next to the bank in shallow water.

The second picture is in deeper water. The fish right next to the bank were white fish. It looked like there were hundereds of white fish up and down the bank waiting for some kokanee caviar.

I was hoping to see a couple of 20 inch fish that I had missed, but I think that elktalker thinned the population so much that there is none to be found.

I think that most were between 16 and 18 inches, which is about the size I was catching later in the year.

It is nice to see people getting there kids out there and let them learn something about the fish it helps them learn the respect for the rivers and the fish.

I havent had a chance to make it out to see them my engine came for my 2000 Celica, and ive been spending all my time swapping a motor (I misshifted it and put a valve through a piston).

If I can get it done before this weekend I want to go tho!

Maybe you should put in an automatic transmission while you have it apart

Jerk! LOL.

I actually put the engine from an auto in cause I knew it wouldnt be abused.

It happens a lot. Toyota didnt engineer the gearbox to lock you out of misshifting, and the gates are so close, it is a simple mistake to make if youre driving fast and shifting hard. It also doesnt help that they didnt engineer the valvetrain to allow much higher revs than it does stock (my engine probably saw ~12,500 rpm on that misshift - the valves floated and BAM hit pistons).

Anyway, I got the engine swapped and its running pretty though. I might see if theyre still running around here. I somehow doubt it, but they might be.

I was fishing for browns at Wickiup a couple weeks ago and caught a nice bright koke that was 14 inches long. Obviously part of next years mature fish. Looks like next years fish are gonna be pretty good sized...
