Fishing Single Barbless Hooks
Hey Guys,
I am fishing on a friends small lake this weekend and he asks that we fish using single barbless hooks with no bait. d
I normally fish trout with powerbait worms etc: and don't own a fly pole. Any Ideas on how I can fish within those rules? There are supposed to be good sized trout in the lake. He stocked it a few years ago so the fish are nice sized by now .
I was thinking of filing down the barbs on some jigs to get me started. And maybe running some small steelhead soons
Thank IN advace

Re: Fishing Single Barbless Hooks
Interesting, I guess if you prefer bait I would just flatten the barbs on some #6 baitholder hooks. However if the question is lethality, it would be better to fish a good sized treble with all the barbs attached on a spoon or wobbler than bait on a single point barbless hook. The chances of a fish taking the hook deep and getting mortally wounded is much greater with bait than artificial lures. In deference to my friend and his lake I would probably change out the hooks on a couple Gold Thomas fightin' Fish to get me started and then see what he suggested from there.

Re: Fishing Single Barbless Hooks
It's easy to change spinners out to siwash hooks. Just clip the treble hook off and attach a small siwash. Small blue fox spinners come with a siwash hook in the package just for that reason.

Bubbles and flies work well with spinning outfits.

Re: Fishing Single Barbless Hooks
I was thinking that too, I can just pickup a few flys and some smaller blue fox spinners. This is after I shoot my limit of ducks you see!
What the heck do you mean by bubbles? I am a very lightly skilled fisherman!

Bubbles are the clear plastic floats.

Re: Fishing Single Barbless Hooks
A little advice from someone who learned the hard way:
When fishing with barbless hooks, you want to keep your drag a wee bit tighter than with barbed hooks.
Barbless hooks + no pressure = bye-bye fish.

Re: Fishing Single Barbless Hooks
Most stores that carry fishing tackle carry these. They come in a number of differen't colors including clear.
Tie the mainline to the pointy end and your leader to the fat end. Add a fly, wet or dry, and reel slowly.

Re: Fishing Single Barbless Hooks
I have been using hooks from Shelton Products and am loving them, not only are they barb-less they also release with just a tug of the 'release line'. Absolutely the slickest thing in fishing.

Re: Fishing Single Barbless Hooks
I've used small spoons with pinched down barbs before with pretty good success - needlefish, dick nites, canadian wonders.
Good luck!

Re: Fishing Single Barbless Hooks
Started using Barbless up in Canada [because it was the law]and we have never lost a fish for that reason, did lose a nice silver because I tied a clinch knot on polymer line tho.

Re: Fishing Single Barbless Hooks
I have been using single point barbless hooks on my lures for several years now. I just snip off the trebles and pinch on a siwash. Thomas boyant spoons are a good lure to try if you have not fished with lures before-just cast them out and reel them back in. Rooster tails are another great lure to try, but get the 1/8 oz. size, as the smaller sizes don't seem to spin well with a single point hook. Use a size 8 siwash. I catch a lot of trout on black or green Roosters with a gold blade.

Re: Fishing Single Barbless Hooks
I would use a bubble and fly. I used woolly worms and the bubble in the past and have caught some very nice trout. I also would use Rooster tails. Take your pliers and pinch the barb down. Don`t worry about using barbless hooks, I have never had a problem with keeping fish hooked with them. Don`t forget to use scent. Good luck!
