Default Crane Prairie/Upper Deschutes in October

I will be over at Crane this weekend and would love to have a heads up on any flies I might try. I will be at Cow camp and would love to hit the river in that area. I've never fished it this time of year. I usually fish chironomids in the summer-is it the same now? Thanks for any advice.

Check the regs. for the Deschutes. Unless they've changed the rules, the D is closed upstream from Crane Prairie this time of year.

At CP, early am or late pm I like pulling small to intermediate woolies on a slime line in the channels.

Rest of the time, unless it's too windy, I always go with with the Chrom's, prefer Ice Cream Cones with white heads and brass bodies, and like to fish them alongside the edge where the channels come up to shallower water - usually have good luck 25 yards straight off Rocky Point, where some interesting bottom structure seems to consistently hold fish.

Should be a beautiful time to be there....
