Default Spinning reel line

I just ripped off the old memory impregnated line from my spinning reel and was wondering what I should replace the old mono with. Did some looking and now I'm in a dilemma. Do I want flourocarbon or braided replacement. What say you?

Oh... Gonna be fishing for smaller fish typically under 8#- fresh and saltwater. Examples are; trout in the lake, surf perch in the ocean, maybe some sea bass fishing too.

I've heard of lots of positive reviews on berkley fireline.

Any of the braided lines will give you quite a bit better sensitivity than the monos for any vibrations that come directly up the line, for example the fish yanking directly on the line. The braided lines are generally thought to give you better sensitivity under all conditions but this is not the case. Any vibration that is 90 degrees out from the line, for example the fish just shaking his head, will actually result in lower sensitivity with braided line.

There are advatages to the three main types of line. braid is strong and has no strech, which is good for hook sets, and it floats which is good for bobers, Braid is also more supple and will come off the spool with less coils. Problem is it will fray over time and does not last as long in the sun. I like the P-line braids and fused lines, also like tuff line. It does have a tendency to hang up on your spool and will not come of easy until the line is wound tight enough and is broke in some.

Flurocarbin is very dense and becomes invisble in the water. It is a good leader materal. it has high memory and is prone to kinks and chips. It is strong when not damged, but one it gets a chip or a kink it breaks real easy especially at the knot points. I would not use it as a main line, but do use it as a leader in clear water situations.

Mono: mono is a good main line if you get some good supple stuff. it does have some stretch to depending on the brand. I use it for lighter situations like for trout, pan fish, light steelhead setups, and off my bait casters (comes off the spool easier for bait casters) My favorit mono is Suffix Elite. very strong and low memory with very good knot strength. Stren lines are also good. Some people like the Pline, but I find it to stiff and with a lot of stretch.

In your case I would go with a solid mono like the Suffix Elite ore a good braid since your are using a spinning reel alot of ot comes down to preference and having a reel with a good drag

It's a lot easier to make recommendation when we know what rod/reel you're using.

Lots of info for which I thank all of you. I have an 8' lamiglass "S" glass that I made from the blank up 10 years (or more) ago. Limber yet a strong back for the 12#er I dream of catching some day. It has an older shimano reel with lever drag that worked well for fishing off the jetty. No, it's not new stuff but it has worked well for fishing in the past. it's not a junker reel, this one has a good smooth drag, better than some of the new reels I've played with. The memory of mono line is what I didn't like.

My newest thing is surf fishing. I've read up a little on that and they say small line and lightweight gear is fun. The German brown trout at Fish lake will be a good test before the surf fishing expedition. Fish lake is up next weekend... Surf fishing will take a set of waders I haven't found/bought yet.

I'm told the braid is great for half of what I fish for. Berkley fireline in 6# is said to be "kick butt" for surf fishing. It casts a mile and not a lot of drag from ocean waves. Because there are so many fishing adventures I use this pole/reel for I'm thinking I'm going to spool up with Trilene XL in 6#. It seems like a good all around line and it has little memory for long casting but good strength for the bass in the weeds.

If I don't like it I'll swap out for braid like I was pushing toward initially. Either way I'll use flouro for leader. Gotta start somewhere and Trilene XL is less expensive than braid. The XL was sold as a better casting line so that's why I'm doing it first. My conscious tells me I'm seeing a spool of fireline in the near future. We'll see.

HA! I couldn't find a roll of Trilene XL to save my soul. Even had a buddy check the Tillamook store... Must be good stuff everyone said they sold out.

Went with Pline 8# instead (based on a post about casting line). Spooled it up today. So far I like it; strong, low memory and my one down fall was it didn't like the knots I used. Ended up with the polymar (like I use with the tuffline on my sturgeon reel).

Who'd ever have guessed this would be such a chore to get line on a reel?
