Default Munich Germany...what to do?

I am off to Munich next week on biz, and have an evening and full day to myself. Anybody have any tips on what to do? I would like to hit a castle or two if there are some with in a days reach?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

There are a few castles with a few hours drive. Be sure to check out any tours offered from the hotel you're staying at. All of (cold war) Europe is only about as big as Texas, so it's easy to hit a country or two in a day. Austria is close to the south, very pretty. Dead of winter is a nice time to check out the Alps. For a real life experience, go to Dachau, it was one of the concentration camps during the war. Oh yeah.....if you like barley pop, they make about 300 different kinds of the best beer on the planet, and strangely enough, the best pizza I ever had was in Germany. Be sure to check out a kondeterie (sp), which is a bakery...cheese....wine....pretty girls....wish I could go back while still young enough to enjoy it. History everywhere. Some of the "new" buildings are older than the USA. Enjoy your trip

I would go the the world famous Fishing Museum
located in the Marienplatz. The Old Town Square, right next to the town clock.
You could very well spend the whole day shopping and bending an elbow at the Ratskeller.
The Subways are great but take some time getting used to. I would not take a cab anywhere until you go to the airport.

When I was in munich years ago, we caught a train and went to the zuickspitz (not spelled right but thats how it is said) mountian in garmish. the train ran along a great looking river and I saw people fly fishing in it. Garmish has some nice places to eat, Great views and there is a cable car that goes to the top of the Mountian. its the higest peak around and you can see for miles from the top. Dont forget to go have a beer at the Hoffbrowhouse (also not spelled correct)in Munich.

Gus,

My man, how are you?

I love Munich.

I agree, Dachau is rather sobering. It is a short bus ride away from the main train station down town. It is right there in the city. I went on a day when it was 20 degrees and I was warmly dressed and I still froze. Imagine how it really was :depressed:

On a much brighter note, the Christmas market should be starting soon and drinking lots of gluhwein is never a bad idea. Well??? maybe not too much.

I don't think you can become Stammtisch at the HB in a week, but then again you are GUS! I think you have to really earn that one. But you can sure give it a good try.

Look up the Andechs (spelling?) monastery. It's a short train ride out of town. It has a beer garden, run by the monks, that has been in operation since I believe the 1300's. Great beer and food, and inimitable atmosphere.

Gus,you are one very lucky guy! Munchen is one of the most wonderful places in all of Europe, and it's an absolute blast, especially in the winter.
So you have an evening and a day to yourself, unfortunately that really cuts down on your options, but there's still plenty to do. In Munchen there's the Haus der Kunst, modern art meuseum,Die Alte Pinapotek, classical art museum, Der Staats Museum, has a great armor and weapons collection,Der Deutsches Museum, kind of like OMSI.I think th4e closest castle is either Herren Cheimsee,Linderhof and Neuschwanstein, which was the modle for Disneyland. All three were built by King Ludwig II in the mid 1800's,and he was a bull goose loon! Most of the old medieval castles are on the Rhine, around Stuttgart and Frankfurt areas. Silver Hilton is absolutely right about Das Kloster Andechs!! Great bier and food. Try the Landjager sausage with a bier!! I found you can get it in Portland at the Edelweis Deli on S.E.Powell. The Zugspitz is the place you want to go for an incrediable view of Bavaria and the Alps, also a good place for lunch. Bertchesgaden isn't too far away as is Garmisch-Partenkirschen,which is incrediable in the winter.Very quaint old village.he river that flows through Munchen is Der Isar, but fishing and hunting in Germany is very controlled and restricted, just like the rest of Europe. So I guess your options are enormous, and time short. These suggestions might give you some idea of whats available, but the most important thing is to eat, drink and just enjoy the beauty of Munchen!! Viel Spass in Munchen!! I'm jealous man!!

From Thumpers son.

Ouhtfortrouht really covers the the options well.

I will just put some together for you. Not in any particular order.

Garmisch with the zugspitze. Is a day trip with possible skiing and seeing the alps. 1-2 hrs each way depending on your transportation.

Same for Chiemsee. Except there you can see a castle. You can also add on Berchtesgaden there.

A 2-3 hr trip each way to Neuschwanstein (just over the border in Austria) is without compare. Especially in Winter, but it is the only attraction to see.

Dachau, is as described above. If you are a real history buff. Do that and a tour of Munichs downtown. Described later.

My recommendation is to go to Kloster Andechs. It is a working monastery with some of the best beero in the world and good food. You can easily add a boat tour around either Lake Starnberg, which has a small house of King Ludwig which open last year. Or you can tour the Ammersee and see the town of Herrshing. For Herrshing take the Subway (yellow) S5 from downtown and buy a day pass. Take it to Herrsching, walk around and then hop on a boat from the dock there and take a tour of the lake. It will give info, but is not a tourist ride totally. Then take a short cab ride to Andechs. Or use the bus, I have not done that. You can then go back to S5 via cab or bus or take a cab/bus to Lake Starnberg and take the S6 (green)back to town. The other way is downtown to Tutzing (last stop on S6) and tour Lake Starnberg and the Rosen Insel (Ludwigs beach house).

Lastly, downtown is great. Stay away from the hofbrau haus unless you want to see americans and wish to be served by non germans. It has the best atmosphere, but is totally touristy.

Walk up and down Marienplatz for the Glockenspiel(A huge outdoor cuckco (sp?)clock that goes off at ll a.m. and either 4 or 5 p.m. I forget. You can also see the city hall to. Take a city tour (stadtrundfahrt) and pick your favorites to go back to.

Be sure and bring your atm card as they work over there and ther are no fees and you get the interbank exchange rate. That way you won't have to much cash on hand.

The Xmas market is also great if it is on when you are there.

Steve

Ein Veirtelfunder mit kasse und ein grosse Pils, Bitte!

Berchesgarden is a really neat place. Der Konigstein (The Eagles Nest) offers an incredible view.

Nice.. I fired up the puter and see 15 posts... minus mine, and of course immediatly throw out BOEs since he probably thinks Munich is between Moscow Idaho and Rome Oregon...Roy...really it is in Europe. Thanks for all the really great input and even the jabs

I ruminate on the feedback and see what I can make work. Probably read a Frommer's or another travel book or two.

Mabye while visiting a castle I will pick up one of those medievil stretch racks at the soveniour store....Roy could use a few inches  , okay a few feet
