Default Kings Mountain Vandals

I hiked Kings Mountain in the coast range off highway 6 a couple weeks back and when I got to the top I found out someone had vandalized the wooden box for the log book that you can sign when you get to the top. The tube with the lid was there but the log book was all wet.

I don't understand why anyone would do something like that. I went on the hike to get away and forget about that kind of crap. What should have been a glorious moment arriving at the top of the mountain ended when I felt a slap in the face. There it was, VANDALISM staring right at me. Well I signed the log book the best I could. Good thing I brought my own pen because someone took that as well. I left my pen for the next hiker.

The hike was ruined and I hiked back to my car filled with rage. At least I got some exercise

Anyone know who I would get permission from to pack some wood up thier and build a new wooden box?

Does anyone know what happens to those log books?

They must have burned the old box because I did not see a trace of it. Maybe a different material would be in order.

Hey there HMBF,

Bummer about the summit register. I don't understand that kind of ****, and don't try to.

The summit register is maintained by the Mazamas (see Mazamas.org) in cooperation with the Oregon Dept of Forestry, who manage the Tillamook State Forest. The log books from this and other summits are kept in the Mazamas archives (office is located on NW 19th Street, in Portland. A great and really extensive mountaineering & travel library is open to the public).

I'll let the office know tomorrow about the vandalism.

Sorry it bummed your day. But hey, you still climbed 2800' to the top of a beautiful hill - good going!

After winter, try the full Elk Mtn - King Mtn traverse loop for a good workout, you'll have earned your ale

garyk, thanks for the info.

I know someone in the Mazamas but have not talked to them for several years. Think I will look them up.

That would be great if you notified them about the vandalism. They probably already know about it. But you never know.

I have done the ridge to Elk Mountain many times. When you are out there by yourself it is just great!

Someday we will not be allowed in any of the public or private lands. Because of this stupidity.
