SCAPPOOSE -- A single-engine plane crashed in a swampy area near the Scappoose Airport and investigators have not found any sign of survivors.

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office reported that radio and radar contact with the pilot were lost after a mayday call at 7:10 a.m., Tuesday.

Witnesses spotted wreckage a short time later in a swampy area about three miles north of the Scappoose Airport, near Sauvie Island....

Thx Kevin, I wanted to read more but I'm not giving out my email anymore. Too much spam as it is. Why does KGW need my info?

Here's KOIN's story:

KGW drives me nuts too - it's totally ridiculous for them to ask you for info and to register to view news stories. KOIN and KATU do not require.

Found out today that this was a former co-worker who went from working as an air traffic assistant to a job with FAA Flight Standards. He had since resigned for a position with Boeing.

He was flying his family (wife and two step children, I believe) from the Seattle area to Fresno at 12,000' in his 1965 Beechcraft Bonanza. He asked for a higher altitude, then made a "mayday" call and went down. No information on the nature of the difficulty.

There were some buildups in the area and some reported icing but we will have to wait for the investigation to be completed to learn the facts.

A sad and ironic event. He was a great guy.
