Default Quality Freezer

I'm sick and tired of my eggs in the fridge/freezer combo automatically defrosting. Sometimes the eggs in the jars are almost completely unfrozen. Has anyone else ever had bad experiences with a freezer destroying eggs?

I am now on the look for a manual defrosting freezer, also known as a deep freezer. This should solve my problem of ruined eggs, and I would think the eggs would last a lot longer. Do any of you have a personal preference on brands or features to look for?

Thanks,
Matt

Matt:

Get a chest freezer that defrosts at the push of a button. Then --- don't push the button. Cheap and keeps its cold air in when the door is opened, instead of spilling it all out on the floor.

I agree about getting a chest freezer, they are the way to go.

Here's something I've recently leaned while dealing with appliances in my rentals: according to the appliance parts store I deal with, and the appliance repair person I deal with, older is better when it comes to refrigerators and freezers. Apparently they just don't make them like they used to. Older ones work better and last longer. I was also talking to my repair person about replacing our 20+ year old freezer we keep in the garage with a newer more "efficient" model. His opinion is that I'd be better off keeping the one I have, and just repairing it if it ever acts up (which it hasn't). According to him, the energy savings with the newer models is minimal at best, plus they just don't compare in life expectancy with the older ones. My parents have a chest freezer that's at least 40 years old, and it still works like a charm.

So if what I've been told is true, my recommendation would be to go with an older (used) chest freezer. Cheaper to buy, and it will probably outlast a newer one.

Just my 2 cents.

We just bought an older, well not really old, but non defrosting freezer from Willierower, and it works like a charm!

We love it! Thanks WR!

I was leaning toward the chest freezer, but didn't have a brand name in mind. If I was going to get a "new" freezer, what should I look for?

Otherwise, where can I find an "old" freezer?

I'm hoping to buy one ASAP, as some eggs need to be either saved or thrown out. I just don't want to waste my money.

We have two freezers, one upright Amana 21cf and I just bought a Kenmore 9cf chest for bait. I don't like chest freezers because stuff can get buried at the bottom. Uprights are much easier to organize. Whatever you get, don't get "frost free". They are more expensive and dry stuff out. If the ice gets too thick, I just pack everything in my coolers and unplug the freezer and drain. Wife is happy now that the bait has it's own place.
