Default Mystic 10W40 Synthetic 4 Stroke Oil

Gang:
I found this oil today at Costal Farm Supply in Oregon City today and was wondering if anyone had ever tried it. It is made by Citgo specifically for 4 stroke outboards and is a fraction of the cost of other synthetic oils. As I plan on taking on the oil changes myself and will be doing it at least once per year, I think this will be a very good option for me.
It was $3.99 per qt vs $7.35 for Suzuki or $10.00 for AMZOIL.

Any ever tried it? Thoughts?

Thanks

Mobile 1 exceeds the SJ rating required for most outboards. Under 4 bucks a quart if you buy the 5 quart jugs.

Chris:
Yes I like Mobil 1 for my autos also, but in my outboards I want the added anti corrosion and moisture controlling features that a oil formulated for outboards will provide.
I get my Mobil 1 at Costco when then have a coupon on a case.
Thanks for your input!

I guess this brings up a larger question. Has anyone actually seen an analysis of the oil sold by the larger engine manufactures?

My suspesion is that the "anti corrosion and mosture controll features" you speak of are just marketing. As the API rating on the oil sold by the marine engine manufactures is the same (or lower in the case of Suzuki) than what you get off the shelf with Mobile 1.

Later,

Chris

As long as the oil has the appropriate certification your good to go.

I frequent some of the car/truck sites and the discussion of oil is commonplace. There are lots of opinions and resources available on the subject, but this one seems to be one of the better.

There are tons of articles in many forums all across the internet on this matter. The argument that makes the most sense to me is the one that requires any oil used in outboard 4 stroke motors to have an FCW rating. Literally that means for cold water. Obviously outboards don't have the closed cooling system that inboards do and so are always circulating cold water through the engine. Unless you zoom around at full throttle all the time, your engine has a hard time staying at the right operating temp. Yeah you can monkey around with thermostats but the bypasas still allows water to flow and suck away heat. The end result of this is that the rings don't expand and some gas gets by and gets in the crankcase and FCW oil has components to help combat this. Use Mobil-1 or any synthetic that does not have the FCW rating and you compound the issue because these oils are designed to reduce friction and help AUTOMOBILE engines run cooler. So, if you are using these and smell gas in your oil, that's why. If not...wait a while...you will.

I appreciate your input. YES, the Mystic Synthetic Outboard oil is rated FCW, so I think it will be good option for me. I hope that this thread will help some guys save some hard earned money with a product that we all should really not skimp on. I like the idea of it being specifically designed for outboards, synthetic and at the viscosity rate that the Suzuki Motors specify. In addition....again....it's only $3.99 a qt vs. up to triple that price for other synthetic oils.

God Bless

People always get what NMMA oil is confused. FCW refers to oils that have passed a test and meet certain minimum standards. FCW does not require any special anti-corrosion additives. NMMA does do a saltwater fog test to see how well oils protect metal components. There was an article from Trailer Boats magazine from back in October of 2004 that found plain old Penzoil 10w40 auto oil actually outperformed the FCW certified oils. That isn't to say FCW oils are bad or do not offer enhanced protection. But they also provide a great marketing gimmick that lets Quicksilver, Yamaha, Suzuki, etc... sell quarts of 10w40 for 3-4 times what they payed for it.

The argument that outboards run cooler sounds reasonable. But they still require fairly heavy oils, according to most owners manuals. 10w40 is 10w40, the numbers designate how it flows at given temps. If you have an engine that runs cool, you would want 5w30 or 0w20, not a specially formulated 10w40. Most outboard manuals I have seen specifically discourage the use of synthetic oils, though it isn't clear if this is a problem with the synthetic formulas or if it is related to synthetic oil users want to run the oil longer than the max service interval.

Up until the advent of house-brand 4 stroke oils from the engine makers, most 4 stroke outboard owners manuals called for a quality non-synthetic auto grade oil with detergents. In fact, most 4 stroke outboard engines continue to be adapted from automotive or motorcycle platforms. To me, it is 6 of one, 1/2 dozen of the other. If you go with a NMMA certified oil, I'd buy cheaper stuff at West Marine or Fishermans. If saltwater gets inside your crankcase and spends half a season there, all the additives in the world are not going to do you a bit of good. Better to go with a cheaper, decent quality oil and change it frequently.

Thanks Azeal for your input. I agree with you on just making sure that the oil is getting changed regularly!

I'm sold on Synthetics and just have a better feeling knowing that my motors have it in them.

I hope your winter fishing is awesome!

God bless
