Re: Mystic 10W40 Synthetic 4 Stroke Oil
People always get what NMMA oil is confused. FCW refers to oils that have passed a test and meet certain minimum standards. FCW does not require any special anti-corrosion additives. NMMA does do a saltwater fog test to see how well oils protect metal components. There was an article from Trailer Boats magazine from back in October of 2004 that found plain old Penzoil 10w40 auto oil actually outperformed the FCW certified oils. That isn't to say FCW oils are bad or do not offer enhanced protection. But they also provide a great marketing gimmick that lets Quicksilver, Yamaha, Suzuki, etc... sell quarts of 10w40 for 3-4 times what they payed for it.
The argument that outboards run cooler sounds reasonable. But they still require fairly heavy oils, according to most owners manuals. 10w40 is 10w40, the numbers designate how it flows at given temps. If you have an engine that runs cool, you would want 5w30 or 0w20, not a specially formulated 10w40. Most outboard manuals I have seen specifically discourage the use of synthetic oils, though it isn't clear if this is a problem with the synthetic formulas or if it is related to synthetic oil users want to run the oil longer than the max service interval.
Up until the advent of house-brand 4 stroke oils from the engine makers, most 4 stroke outboard owners manuals called for a quality non-synthetic auto grade oil with detergents. In fact, most 4 stroke outboard engines continue to be adapted from automotive or motorcycle platforms. To me, it is 6 of one, 1/2 dozen of the other. If you go with a NMMA certified oil, I'd buy cheaper stuff at West Marine or Fishermans. If saltwater gets inside your crankcase and spends half a season there, all the additives in the world are not going to do you a bit of good. Better to go with a cheaper, decent quality oil and change it frequently.
