Default Photos of pipe insulation leader rollers

Ok, I think a while back I said I'd post some photos of some leader rollers that I use. Since I was down shooting my basement, I finally got around to snapping some pics of the leader rollers that I use.

This first one is a made up of the pipe insulation material, and cut in to 3-4 inch chunks. I will take a box cutting knife and score a circular cut all the way around the insulation for each hook, making sure not to cut all the way through the insulation. I usually put about 6 leaders put roll, and will carry 4 of them on my vest. Maybe something like #1's, 1/0's, and 2 2/0's. Whatever, your fancy. This has worked out great for me if and when I need to take my vest. That's plenty of leaders for a full day of fishing, even if you are fishing Cook Creek and get a 50+ fish day.

Here's another shot.

For the boat, I use those swimming pool toy things. Not too sure what they are called, but they are like six feet long, and usually cost a buck or two, at most. I will cut these in to 12-16 inch segments and will again score circular cuts for each leader. I can easily get 16 or so tied leaders or worms per roller.

Same shot, but with some wormies.

Finally, I will write what each roller contains for quick and easy identification.

Just something I do. Not saying it's right or wrong. Just passing on some info and pretty pictures for you all.

howe do you tie down the loose end of the line? just wrap it under?

like the color, might be a bit much early in the morning unlikely to get lost though!

I just make a slit in the foam and wrap the line through it. I usually double or triple up the leaders per "slot".

nice pics!

Actually it took a second to him me but.... Why the heck do them rolls have pink rubber worms on them??? YUK.. You need to unwrap all them and fill them with leaders for this April..

Don't you dare bring them rubber worms in my boat... You'll be cut off from the egg supply..

Oh and if anyone wants to get some of these rolls to make them just go to the dollar store you can get 5 feet for a buck... And, they have all sorts of colors... You can match your boat...

Not to worry, Stlhdr1, as those "pink" things are for the Hoh and Sauk, not the Lewis. Oh, and the rolls are red, not pink..just some bad color interpretation by my camera.

Don't worry Keith, as the next time you see those rollers, they will be chalked full of leaders ready to go for springers and summers!

In the meantime, there are still some big steelies to be caught on the Wormie!

Ye of little Wormie faith.

Cook Creek is on the Quinault Indian Reservation, and requires you to go in with a Quinault guide. It's a tiny little stream/river that has a Federal fish hatchery on it. When I say a bazillion hatchery steelhead enter that little stream, I'm not kidding. Last time I fished it, it was a 50+ steelhead day for me. Any place on that Creek that looks deep enough and dark enough (has very tanin looking water) will and does hold fish. Drop in eggs under a float, wait until float disappears, set hook, land fish, repeat, and repeat, and repeat, etc.

Oh yeah, and yes, I just push the end of the leader in to the roller as I roll up the leaders. Set the hook where you want it, and wind up the leader. Push in the end, and VOILA, you're set to go, and will instantly become a friend of anyone in the boat, as they will always snag your leaders over their own.

"Why tie up leaders when we know Parker will show up with a couple hundred all set to go!:

Danny Joe's Original High Floaters. I'd put in the URL, but those always seem to magically get edited out when I do. Oh well, email me directly if you need the URL, or try a Google search for the above keywords.

I buy them in bulk for around 10 cents a piece. You'd have to give Danny a call to see what he's offering.

Each worm is hand poured, dyed, and a real pain to make, or so says Danny. He's absolutely flabbergasted at why us Northwesterners are using a pink floating worm for salmon/steelhead. He's a funny guy to talk to.

Parker,

Nice pics and great info. I checked the web page and evidently those worms won't actually float a hook according to his article on how to fish the floater. I assume that's why you are putting on the drift bobber in front? By the way what type of drift bobber is that and are you pegging it to the worm with a toothpick? I don't recall seeing that style anywhere in the Portland metro area. Thanks.

I'm almost positive that worm will easily float a 2/0 hook. I will try it tonight.

That being said, the drift bobber on top of the worm is a winner. It is not toothpicked in place. Just sits on top of the worm, that I've cut flat at the large segment. They can found at the Yakima Bait Co web site. Even if the worm did float the 2/0 hook, I'd still use the winner "just because I know it works." The worm might work without it, but if it's not broken, don't fix it, as I like to say.

You would drift fish this worm, and not run it under a float. I'd use a worm that sank if I were to run a worm under a float.

Parker,

Thanks for the response. I have heard good reports regarding drift fishing the worm. Most of my success has been with a bobber/float but I haven't really drift fished them that much. By the way how long of a leader do you typically run when drift fishing the worm...I realize it's going to depend on conditions but just in general. I appreciate all your expert advice.

36 to 30 inches. Mostly right around 30 inches.

I use pipe insulation also but I put a wooden dowell inside and glue it gives it strength and won't collapse or crush. Its still very light.

Fishing Maniac - I stand corrected. They do indeed sink with a 2/0 hook. They even sink with the winner pegged to it.

I'm guessing that between the two, there is enough floatation to keep the drifted worm mostly off of the bottom.

You will lose a few worms. But, the rewards completely outweigh the lost worms.

Big, mean, and very aggressive fish like to snap at a drifted Wormie.

Pool noodles and pipe insulation make excellent rig holders (thin slices are great for jigs and flies too). Try cutting it with serrated edge bread knife. Slices like bread.

Very convenient...I use them for steelie/salmon/walleye fishing. Very cheap, yet very practical.
