Hobo Spiders!?
OK, so I've been catching a few HUGE spiders around my house lately. In the front and back yard, garage, etc. Until now, all have been outside, but I just caught one in my room about two minutes ago. Now I'm freaked out. Seriously, it looks just like this:
http://www.hobospider.com/info/index.html
I don't want to get bit by one of these nasty things as I don't particularly like open sores on my body, loss of limbs, etc.
Anyone have any info for me about these things? Anyone had a problem with them before, and if so, how did you remedy that?
I need to order some traps now.

Yeah, i looked for that thread, i remember it too. I couldn't find anything. What's the deal with the SEARCH on here, everytime I do a search I come up with tons of random, unrelated topics.

Re: Hobo Spiders!?
From the website.
Quote:
Typically, when venom is injected, the victim will experience an immediate redness which develops around the bite then begins to disappear within a few hours. Very often, for the first 24 hours, the bite appears to be no worse than that of a mosquito; then it begins to blister in the center. Within 24 to 36 hours the blister breaks open, leaving an open, oozing ulceration.
This ulceration 'scabs' over within three weeks from the initial bite, leaving a permanent scar. If the bite is delivered in fatty tissue, the lesion may be very deep and extensive, not healing for over two or three years.

Re: Hobo Spiders!?
You could always fumigate. That should take care of them.

Re: Hobo Spiders!?
When my grandma moved out of her house my uncle started seeing these spiders everywhere. He started getting obsessed with them and did alot of research and even bombed his own house for them even though he’d never seen them at his house. Eventually he discovered they were just common brown house spiders. We have never let him live it down. For Christmas last year we bought him Arachnophobia. Look up Brown house spider and I bet most people cant tell the difference.

Re: Hobo Spiders!?
There are 2 other spiders in the same family as Hobo Spiders that look almost identical. It more than likely was one of the others, not the Hobo Spider. I have identified quite a few 'Hobo' Spiders as to one or the other of the look-alikes.
There is a lot of missinformation about Hobo Spiders. There are many 'exterminator' sites that have a lot of wrong information on them, so I wouldnt really trust what they have to say.
If you have any questions about Hobo Spiders or spiders in general, feel free to ask me. I have ID'd many spiders for my work and also have had training and education in entomology/spiders.

Re: Hobo Spiders!?
They are nasty spiders. There are traps that work very well. I do know of a pest company that can come out and spray. The traps attract them and they stick ot it and die. I see these tings every day when I crawl under homes to inspect them. I t kind of make you itch all over dont it.

Re: Hobo Spiders!?
There was an interesting thread on these critters about 6 months ago on Ifish. You may want to search for it. Scary!

Re: Hobo Spiders!?
Russ is probably right.
I am in the industry. Many people walk a fine line trying to "inform" their clients about target organisms. Fear is not a good way to make a decision. But a lot of people are scared into spending their money.
If you are really that worried about it, squish the ones you see. But to spend money to rid yourself of a potentially, but I am not really sure, kinda sorta, then again it may not be, but I am scared, pest? I can send you in the right direction( or someone who is honest, knowledgeable, and fair) in your direction.
The next big hope in the pest biz looks to be mosquitos. And with an ill informed public, many businesses are looking to capitalize on this opportunity thanks to the media frenzy. In an economy like we have today, some less than honest PCOs are looking to make a quick buck.

Re: Hobo Spiders!?
Two years ago, a friend of mine was bitten on both legs by a hobo. Timely diagnosis was a problem as she developed ulsers at both sites the size of a half of a golf ball. The flesh and some bone rotted and for a year or so therefter she had to have the scabs removed biweekly to allow the application of various ointments. The pain kept her off of her feet and her business suffered. She's fine now but no spider is safe in her presence.
