I have a spare, cuase I learned the hard way that there is a fusable link in them that apparently goes out at 150 when they are in a closed evironment, you are welcome to have it. It is dissassembled at the moment. I can show you how to rewire SAFELY w/out the link. they can be had new at Bi-mart for $11.00

Re: hot plate for home made smoker ?
I never have tested my smoker, but I have heard
135-150 is a good range to start at outside
temp. plays a lot into the scheme. good luck

I usualy smoke cool, 85-95 degrees, so I prefer 80-160 degree range.

Re: hot plate for home made smoker ?
BP,my dad made a smoker out of an old refrigerator. He went through a couple hot plates until he switched to a heavy duty model. He also extended the adjustment knob outside the smoker,so he could adjust the heat without opening the door. He used a small castiron frying pan for the wood chips. Also to prevent fires, install a shield to stop the meat from dripping right on the hot plate.

Re: hot plate for home made smoker ?
i like the idea of building a cover to protesct the burner ..i will have to play with that idea to figure a sytem to allow the smoke & heat, but block the drip .. (window screen?)
off to the think tank ...
Electric skillets huh .. i'll look into that.

Re: hot plate for home made smoker ?
Old refrigerators are an eyesore  Yea like I don’t have lots of eyesores around the barn already
Build a framework out of 1x2’s, side it with shakes and use oven racks. You will have a nice looking as well as functional smoker.

Re: hot plate for home made smoker ?
Watch the temperature with a hot plate, look for
one with some type of adjustment. You don't want to be too hot or too cold. Just food for
thought, put a hanging thermometer in your smoker.
