Marine Corps Birthday

Today is the official Birthday of America's Marine Corps. So, please take a moment to wish any Marines - or former Marines - that you know a happy birthday...you will not need to say anything more than that, fore they will know what you are referring to.

History: On 10 November, 1775 a Corps of Marines was created by a resolution of the Continental Congress. Two battalions of Marines were thus formed and the illustrious history of our Corps was started.

A week from Thursday will be the 60th anniversary of the invasion of Betio in the Tarawa Atoll. It was the first modern amphibious assault on a defended beachhead.

RAdm Keichi Shibasaki boasted that "a million men could not take Betio in a thousand years of battle."

Maybe not, but 5,000 Marines took it in a little over 3 days.
