Default Scaredy Cat !!!

Ok Ladies and Gentlemen I have to get my tonsils out, Not looking forward to it :depressed: but apparently they have had enouph and want to get infected all the time. So i am looking for support here not any horror stories please, I am allready nervous mainly cause i have never needed surgery for anything else before and i am working on 40 years old. So if anyone has any secrets on how to deal with the pain afterwards or things they did to help with the healing they would be much appreciated  . I think i am more nervous of the whole surgery thing than i am the pain to fallow.

Well, when I had mine out the only thing I really remember is afterwards I got LOTS of ice cream. That was 40 years ago and dont know, things have probably changed, but its worth a try

Look,
I had 2/3 of my colon removed and I went elk hunting three weeks later. Think positive. No pain.

Lots of ice cream and jello. Don't be afraid of the surgery itself. Prepare yourself for a long recovery. Kids get through it in a coupla days, but I hear that with adults it is worse.

But, it's temporary, so focus on the fact that you're fixing a problem and a little discomfort short-term is worth not having to be sick all the time in the long run.

Good luck!

My (now ex) wife had them done when she was 25. Her employer had a 5 gallon bucket of ice cream and about 10,000 popsicles delivered to the house, which was good because she couldn't eat anything else. She was fairly miserable for a few days, mainly because she couldn't talk. I, on the other hand, never had it so good. Almost 4 days of peace and quiet! Although I did make the mistake of giving her my dog training whistle so she could get my attention. Bad move.
Once you're recovered, life will be much better. You won't be sick anywhere near as much as before. Tonsillitis is miserable.
Kind of like wisdom teeth. Sucks to get 'em pulled, but you're grateful when they're gone.

Just watched a report on the news yessterday about new procedure of "shaving" the tonsils. This new method doesn't remove the entire tonsil and therefore there is a lot less pain. Only a day or two of pain instead of up to a week. Check with your doctor to see if he is doing the new procedure.

Had mine removed when I was around 5yrs old.
Don't remember any of it. I do remember a few other things from that time period. So must not have been that bad.

Good luck.

Husband says: He also did his first surgery at about 30 that was for tonsils and sinus rotor-rooter. He says... "Drugs". They will be your best friend for a few days. But it is worth it. If you are asleep, you don't hurt.

It will be the worst sore throat you have ever had, that's all. Yeah, a few days worth of narcotics is the way to go.

I had mine out in my early 20s, I had constant strep throat, tonsils were scarred, ugly. I've hardly had a scratchy throat in the 20+ years that followed.

Well worth the worst sore throat you'll ever have.

You'll do fine!

MD,

Can't really give you any hints or tips on getting through the pain other than to just try to take your mind off of it with keeping yourself occupied (TV, radio, reading). Got mine out when I was 8, and they didn't believe in drugs back then  but i'd reccommend it for you cause it would probably make things A LOT easier! Have a pencil and paper handy so you can communicate while you're recovering in the hospital and at home. From what I can remember, you're not gonna want to talk for a day or so...at least I didn't Two words...MUCHO ICECREAMO!! Popcicles don't hurt either  The first few days of pain are the worst and then it's all downhill from there. Here's to a speedy recovery!!

I just wanted to say thank you to all you guys for keeping it positive , i have never had surgery before for anything so that's a little nerve racking but i am definately looking forward to after it is all said and done. I am more tired of getting sick all the time than i am nervous of the surgery, so i think i will be ok. This last time the antibiotcs would not work so they said its time. :depressed: So i guess those days when i can't talk and get bored i will have to spend more time in here typing and reading.

Thanks Again

I had my tonsils take out when I was four. Of what I remember of it, by far the worst part was the fact that the hospital LOST my security blanket! I'm still suffering from that today. I miss my blankie! The pain wasn't too bad, just a sore throat. Whatever you do, don't bring your security blanket to the hospital. If you do that, you'll be okay.

Eat ice cream. The cold keeps the pain and swelling down. You may gain 10 pounds, but if you keep the ice cream coming, it'll feel better.

Tonsilectomy in adulthood is a little uncomfortable for a few days, but not unbearable. Don't be afraid to take the pain meds that are prescribed. (This will not cause addiction either...some adults have an unexpressed worry about that.) The meds will make it far easier to be rested, and to take the oral fluids in the first few days. Popcicles are truly a very good treat for the first day or so...so stock up.

Another tip of advice...if you wish to do so don't be reluctanct to ask for some iv medication in the preoperative area to reduce your anxiety...it works very very well, and in reality the anxiety is the worse part of it all!

Get to bed early the eve before after having a fun and maybe physically tiring day, so you will sleep well and be resting in the am of surgery.

The safety record of this proceedure is very well established.

Take care, and fill us in on line about how it all went while you are at home with nothing better to do!!

As I recall, BIll Cosby had his tonsils out, and then turned into a multi-millionaire comedian and cultural icon. Children loved him, women adored him, and men jostled to be the first to shake his hand.

So it shouldn't be too bad for you.

MD,
Good luck and don't be afraid to ask for more pain medication, if you need it :depressed: Take it BEFORE you hurt and you will need less.
