I don't fish from the bank there but I think you would do fine with twenty or thirty pound mono.

40# is pretty standard. I used 30# today though and was able to hang up in more flow with less weight.

The plunking standard is 25 LB mono mainline, 20 LB dropper, and 40 LB leader. Trust me - 25 lb is more than enough. You will like having less water drag on the line and casting less weight to hold.

Plus you will have greater line capacity on your reel and will be able to cast further. Anything more than thirty and you will not cast very far without much trouble (big weights and big stiff line = birdnest) and you will be forced to cast big weights to hold which also affects casting distance. Usually, the bigger mainline you use the closer to shore you are forced to fish, which can be a major disadvantage at times.

OK so I was almost right . I just have to step up my leader by 15# test. I have seen alot of dudes using 40 for mainline though. To give you an idea of what kind of holding differential you may find, I was actually holding better with 10 oz (on 30 lb mono mainline) than others were with 20 oz (40 lb mono mainline).

Exactly! With the 25 you might have been holding with an 8 or a 6 oz weight in that same circumstance.

i personaly have been using 16# at meldrum, for steelies, and to my amazement most people there were using 30 or 40# for the main line, leader...the whole thing, and they were catching fish.
now that springers are here(sorta) ill be steping up to 30# and ill use some of that 16# for my lead line, i would much rather loose some lead as compared to fighting a 30# main line against a 25# lead line, or god forbid doing that milk jug thing.
just my 2 cents worth

that is really good info that I am looking for, have even searched the archives and cannot find....on some of the photo`s of spinner type rigs that were posted here recently, am thinking that these are used out at anchor or trolling?? or were used with a corky or float from shore?? ........and on a two rig setup at meldrum and I suppose elsewhere... do you use a threeway swivel and 1st rig then run more "mainline " to a second threeway out to your second rig and then from that put your weight...dropper?? does this make sense to anyone?

If it were me I would go with 50 to 65 pound tuff line. It has the same diameter of about 8 pound mono. Then you get the benefit of being able to use less lead and also the extra line capacity. Also, if you have a lot of line out and get bit you'll get a much more solid hook set as it has little stretch. Good luck!

Lookastar, others...thank you for the info, sure appreciate it. from what all I have read on ifish, I am understanding fishing maniac, is that with the new braids...like tuff line, is that at a place ( on the bank ) that has alot of people it is better to use mono because the new lines cut mono?? I do know that most say go with mono.

I thought it standard that when someone has a fish on that others all around reel up...so this only applies to some at meldrum??

The people that don't reel up are definetly the exception, not the rule. My guess is if you asked them to with a paniced/thrilled look on your face, most of them would. I've never seen a fish on at Frenchmen's where everyone in the vicinity didn't bring their lines in, I expect the same is probably true at Meldrum, save for a few.

i fish meldrum quite a bit,and know quite a few people there, but i dont live there like some people, ive only caught 2 fish this year. both at meldrum. the people there are a great bunch, kinda tight knit..but no need to be cuting lines just go and talk to them...........heres your problem your fishing on the weekend, it will be crouded very crouded, so get there early, fish the point if you can(all the way at the end of the bar)
dont be too shy about staying away from the guy next to you if thats were you want to fish.
it seems kind weird getting there 2 hrs before light and theres allready people there with there pole holders up, poles in them baited up waiting for that that minite thats 1 hr from sunrise.

back to the not so shy thing (i got sidetracked)
theres about a quater mile of beach there.
if theres 15 to 20 people out there when you get there fish were you want even if its about 8' from the next rod..yea youll get a bad look because the rest of the beach is open.
when it comes around to about 9:30 it wont be a problem as all the other poles are about 6' apart.
and if your at the point you run the chance sombody will put in between you... hate that. but if you stay 15' from the next guy i gaurntee sombody will get between you.
i would love to come down there on sat. morning to give you a hand, or introduce you to some
regulars but i want to get my boat out for the first time this year.......just rember sat and sun is a mad house there and dosent really represent meldrum bar as a whole.

dampainter send me a pm, would like to chat for a few
