Amahnee, I've spent a fair amount of time at the Dam Hole. About all I've ever seen come down that shute and through the hole are a few kayakers and very few at that.

Saw a boat come into the Dam hole in 1968 and I think it is still in the bottom of the Dam hole

Besides you can fish everyone of those drifts from the bank, so why drift it

There use to be a boat race years ago from the Trask Park to town.  Not many boats made it thru the dam hole right side up. I would also be concerned with going around the penninsula. Nasty piece of water on the point out there. Of course you can launch just below the penninsula.

Several years ago I fished the upper Trask every chance I had. My usual take-out was the upper peninsula but I ventured to the lower peninsula once. On the corner there is a good drop with some big boulders...slammed the boat pretty hard. You are not gaining very much by going all the way since most of the better water is all upriver.

Don't even consider running your drift boat thru Dam Hole. You'll lose it.

Never knew anybody to attempt the Dam Hole chute at winter levels. I wouldn't recommend it. Many years ago though my brother, an experienced river runner, did take Shears Falls on the Deschutes. They did it in a homemade truck inner tube raft and it was televised by KATU TV.

Just polling. I just wanted to see if anyone else has run it. My buddy and I have done it, but we did rope the boat through the chute at the Dam hole. That piece of water around the peninsula isn't that bad, really. Thanks to all for your input. Good floating!

Amahnee -
There are a lot of novice to intermediate rowers on this site and if I were you I would feel really bad if someone decided to go thru lower penninsula thinking that it wasnt that bad, really..... You are obviously an expert on the oars and you should let others know that you are to avoid a tragedy. I will not row lower penninsula and I am pretty dam good on the sticks. Anyone thinking of attempting the drift from lower penninsula through the Dam Hole dont even try it..........IMHO....

I'm with you there brother. I would hope that other's would NEVER put there boat in any water that was unfamiliar to them. My advice to anybody is to scout any water that you don't feel comfortable with, take along an extra 100 feet of rope in case you must rope a section. And GO SLOW! Thanks FM, good point and well taken.

Drifted the upper Trask many times and normally took out right above peninsula because of time. Probably 25% of the time we would go around peninsula and take out at last chance, but you only really add one decent hole to your drift. I would like to add that this one hole gave us the only triple takedown I've ever experienced with 3 of us in the boat. Stuff of memories!
