My son inlaw uses a spincaster reel so I thought a Okuma AV-30, I use a batecaster 6501-CL3
So I am trying to get him set up befor the season takes off and he wont be high and dry.

Well this work?? 20 pound main line Maxama U/G

Or what would you all use on the springers???

It will work, but I think he is going to have work alot with that fish. Are you fishing from a boat or the bank? I say give it a try, it might make for some serious fun!

When I run kwikies I use a Rogue rod with a Calcutta 400 on it. 80 pound braid.

20 lb. is fine. I've landed lots of springers over the last 10 years on 20 lb. maxima. I prefer 25, but I've never broken one off with 20. Just don't horse them, break anchor if you're in a boat and use your drag. Like Zaq, I now use the braided line, but I'm not sure why - probably because it looks so cool....

Oh yeah - I've never fished from the bank, so my advice only applies to the boat.

What type of technique are you going to use for springers? Are you going to drift fish from the bank, or be on anchor and plug, or troll? It depends how you want to catch them. If you are going to try 20lb mono on the spinning reel, that sounds pretty heavy, and might want to jump off the reel. For the baitcasting reel I would recomend a braided line, maybe 65lb, or even 80lb, then use 40lb mono leader. Some might diagree, but I feel those springers are not line shy. I would also try to talk your son inlaw into giving the baitcaster a try. You wont have that 90 degree bend in you line putting all that friction on your line when cranking in those big salmon. With the baitcaster, line will peel off and collect back on the reel in line without the bend like on a spinning reel.

Nothing wrong with using braided line on a spinning reel either. You can get quite a bit more yardage and it will slip through the guides much better than that stiff 20 lb Maxima.
I use braided exclusively on my spinning reels for the reasons above and also because when I am bobber fishing it floats nicely for mending the line.

Thanks all who replyed,
Well will be fishing from the bank, becouse I havent found the right boat for me or for other that I like, (picky)
I over the years have used Stren, and I think it's for me anymore, I went to Trileen, dont like, and for about 5 years I have been useing Maxima 20# and if called for use smaller leaders in the pound range.
Seeing that we are bank bound for this season I think maybe braded line for him and I well use the U/G untel it's gone than braded for the 6501, He get so flustered when he get a bird nest that it's not worth it, so a spinnen reel well have to work for now just dont know witch one to buy for him.
THANKS ALL-------TIGHT LINES.

I think the AV 30 is kinda small.............I have one I use for sidedrifting for steel, it seems like it would be small for salmon.

I have fished the last two years at the wind river and have caught a lot of salmon. I use ambassador 6501 reels loaded with 14 and 12 pound test. I have never broke one off yet. I don't like the heavier line, I think it effects the action of the lure. Just my oppinion, but I will stick with what works.

AV 30 would NOT, I repeat NOT, be big enough for 20lb line. I have one that I used once and I am thinking of selling it just because of the capacity reason. It will only hold about 110yds of 10lb test....and thats Suffix that is supposed to be a little smaller diameter than regular line.

I think other Okuma reels have different capacities (larger/deeper spools for their size) so you might want to try those if the AV-40 is too big (I agree its big).
