College Student needs your scrap metal
My son is in a Metal shop class in college. He needs to supply his own metal. I thought a good way to do this would be to use only materials he can recycle. If you have any scrap metal you would be willing to part with please let me know. We can pick up after 5pm most week nights and alomost any time on the weekend. I have a small utility trailer I can haul the metal in up to 8ft long.
Thanks

Re: College Student needs your scrap metal
I am probably to far from you to make it worth the drive. I am tearing out an oil burning furnace with a boiler in my house. They look like baseboard heaters but they are hot water radiant heaters in a sheet metal frame. I am going forced air, it is going to be a blast installing ducting in an old existing house.
I had plans to haul this all to the recycler for a few bucks, but somebody needing some college help, is more important than the few bucks I will get for the scrap he needs.
I just took a pic, there is some piping in the trailer, and a bunch of sheet metal, I would guess it to be roughly 18 gauge. I know he doesnt want it all, the roughly 700lb furnace boiler at the bottom of the pile I dont plan to move again. Getting it out of the basement was a one time thing. He can pick thru and get piping and plenty of sheet metal to cut up and stick back together.
There is quite a bit left in the house that needs demo'd, ....better yet he can have all of that. Just kidding, there is a fair amount in the trailer if it is worth the drive for you, In Amity, 8 miles south of McMinnville.

Re: College Student needs your scrap metal
He will need clean metal, no rust or paint. Probabnly 3/8" plate at least 12"x12" at first for running beads

Re: College Student needs your scrap metal
BOE, thank you for the offer. Amity is a bit far.
Keta, The Welding instructor indicated that he can have any and all types of metal to work with. This would give him a better variety of metals to weld and learn with.
I work at Intel but they do not allow employees to take anything out of the dumpsters.

Re: College Student needs your scrap metal
I've got a 10x10 pop up canopy frame that he can have and I get some small aluminum blocks from time to time if that's useful.
I work near PDX.

Re: College Student needs your scrap metal
We have some scrap mild steel and stainless that he could probably use. Lots of 1/2" x 2" bar in varying lengths and probably some large plates I could round up. our shop is in Forest Grove, and I could meet you there on a weekend day, or hang out after 5 if interested. Most of this would be great for practicing running beads and joining pieces. If interested let me know and I will put together a small pallets worth for you

Man,
I love IFish.
BOF Mike,
Can "non Intel" employees take things from the dumpsters? If so, might be able to find someone to do that for you. Just a thought

Re: College Student needs your scrap metal
Intel does not allow anyone to take anyting out of the dumpsters. They have a recycle person that they sell it to. BUT, Ive found many IFISHERS out there willing to help out with the request. what he cant use he will be donating to the class for those that can not afford to buy the metal or find metal on there own. Anything to help a student really helps.
thanks everyone.

Re: College Student needs your scrap metal
Craigslist is checked every 1/2 hour. By the time we reply to any ads the scrappers have already claimed all metal. We did manage to get 2 BBQ's but that was it. Its a brutal competion on Craigslist to get all the free metal.

Re: College Student needs your scrap metal
I have a pile of scrap aluminum from a 35' trailer I demolished. There is also a lot of scrap steel in the same pile. If you want it let me know, I have an excavator I can load it in a trailer for you and save your back. By the way Davis recycling is between me and you and Clackamas Steel is about a mile away from that ( new steel is much better to learn on). Let me know if this is what you are looking for.

Re: College Student needs your scrap metal
Thanks everyone for the great offers. My son has more then he needs right now. Our neighbors father came by our place with a truck load of scrap metal from his Salvage yard. My son will use what he can and donate the rest to the school scrap yard for other students. The response has been overwhelming. Thank you all that replied and helped out. His instructor was very appreciative of the donation Jordan made to the class.
