Default A Few More Walleye

Chased Coho around for a while today. Saw a few jump but couldn't get a bite. Switched to SMB and only managed a couple of dinks. Put on a bottom walker and went 6 for 8 on Walleye in an hour and a half. 1st fish wiggled out of my hand while I was taking a pic. Kept 3 and tossed 2 back. Is it just me or do the Walleye fight harder in the Fall?

DUDE....you are an absolute machine in that thing!

I love it.

Do the walleye fight harder in the fall? Its hard to say, although I've never been terribly impressed by the fight of any walleye.

Thanks RC. I think I'm finally starting to figure out fishing for warm water species. Now I just need to figure out how to catch the big ones!

OK, so who's got a good recipe for Walleye? I've tried them fried in a cornmeal breading and it was OK but after all the comments about how good they are, I was a little let down. Somebody care to share a recipe that will give me that "Best Eating Freshwater Fish There Is" experience.

Thanks!

Try "Pride of the West" batter mix. It can be found at your grocery store and comes in a small bag. It is easy to mix and is awesome for deep frying fish. I have used it on bottom fish, salmon, and halibut. This is my favorite- it has a hint of garlic to it and is great with a batch of fresh fries.

Honestly, I think maybe your expectations may have been set high with all the hype.

A freshwater fish will never taste like Filet Mignon....but I like my Walleye stripped down plain. No batter....just some oil or butter and fry em up.

My definition of how good something is, is how good it tastes when you don't add anything.

You can make your wallet taste good if you put enough "special sauce" on it. Same with Ducks.

To be honest I've grown partial to spiking dry pancake mix w/ Montreal Steak seasoning then rolling chunks to coat then pan fry in butter.

I gotta ask, because it's killing me as your last pic definately is not of the lower CR.
What pool are you fishing?

I can't seem to find a damn fish in the lower CR. All my normal grounds are barren.

Pride of the West will give you standard restaurant type fish and chips. Pretty darn good.

If you really, really want to have good fried fish mail order some House-Autry seafood breader (google it). Get the onion ring mix and the hushpuppy mix while you are at it. The stuff is not expensive but it's not available on the west coast. We order it a couple times a year- having some onion rings or hush puppies with the fish is a classic NC fish camp dinner.

How to do it: bowl with some egg/milk mixture or beer, dip the fish, put it in a bowl with the dry breader. Then immediately back into the egg wash or beer, then back in the breader. I pan fry mine in a cast iron skillet but if you have a deep fryer it will go faster.

I take a lot of care with the fish I catch- they're all iced immediately- and would take the few walleyes I've caught over the many halibut I've caught. Take some time to filet the fish right and take off the skin an you'll have some fine fish and chips material. We eat halibut a couple times a month but my wife regularly asks if I can go catch some more walleye. Unfortunately, they don't come as easily as salmon or any of the ocean fish.

All they need is a little lemon pepper sprinkled on them. I fillet them out and grill them skin down until flaky.

Hunt'nFish, your posts have helped a whole lot in my quest for Walleye. I'm not one to publish "hot spots" on the web but the least I can do after all the info you've provided is drop you a PM.

And, thanks for the recipes guys! I'll keep it simple and light on the next batch.
