Not sure there is a difference between "regular" motor oil and "4 stroke" motor oil. If I were you I would look in the owners manual or call a Yami dealer. I wouldn't run synthetic but thats just my opinion.

You can use just about any brand of oil. just make sure the right
weight. I use chevron oil it meets all requirements. and if you take a look
in your manual it will tell you any oil that meets certain requirement.
And most all oils meet it.
If you are running a 2 stroke. There are requirements to follow,
more over. than the normal 4 stroke internal combustion engine as we have in our cars and pickups.
the 2 strokes of today have problems with fouling of plugs and
plugging up there injectors. so the use of synthetics is your best
choice for oil for them.

I believe I read somewhere you need to run oil rated for marine use or you may have warranty issues. I am no oil expert but I believe marine oil has some corrosion inhibiters. Some of the off the shelf oils have the rating but some does not just look in the manual and get the specs.

back when powerboat reports was around they did an interesting series of tests on oil, including ability to prevent salt fog environment corossion - BIG differences between oils. suggest you track down the article. OMC's synthetic fared best, so I use that in the T-8, sma;; $$ to gamble. I use yami 4M and change it OFTEN in the f-250.

The manual is very clear as to what type of oil is approved for use in yamaha outboards. Most motor oils are fine. Read the manual carefully. It specifies the proper oil grades for use in your engine. Most high quality 10w30 motor oils are fine. I own 8 differnet outboards and the only caution I've been given by a Suzuki technical rep was not to use synthetic!

Nope.

As long as the oil meets the specs that Yamaha requires, then warranty isn't an issue.

All Yamaha requires is SAE 10w-30 or 10w-40,that meets API grade SE,SF,SG,SH,SJ,SL. Thats basically any motor oil produced in the last 10-15 years.

Nothing special.

I've been running Chevron 10w-30 in my F150 and T8 since '06. Both engines run like a top.

Why?

Other than lighten your wallet, whats Yamaha's overpriced oil going to do for you?

Every Yamaha dealer I've been to uses something other than Yamalube unless you specifically ask for it.

Good point. No reason to spend an extra $20 an oil change a handful of times a year for the manufactures oil.

Rebuilds are cheap.

Use yama lube 10/30
It has all the good stuff you need in it and was designed for your motor.
