Default 2002 merc outboard smoking

I'm posting this question for my Dad. His motor starts smoking and smells like wiring is burning randomly. It has done this 3 or 4 times now in the last year and a half. When we pull the top off, its doesn't look like anything has been burnt (no sign of where it is coming from).

Has anybody experienced this?

If it is a 4 stroke he might have too much oil in the crankcase, which could cause smoke on startup.

Thanks for the reply. It is a 4 stroke.

It hasen't smoked on startup. The first time it smoked and stunk was when we were 10 miles west of Garibaldi on a rough day.
