Default extracting frames from avi's

my father-in-law just got back from five weeks in europe. he filled up two 128mb memory cards with images only to find out that he was taking avi's instead of jpg's. (it's funny because you get about two seconds of the thing he wanted a pic of, then about six seconds of his feet. i've got movies of the ground from all over europe.)

so, does anyone have a good free tool for extracting the frames from avi's? i tried irfanview and once i found a codec for avi's was able to extract the frames, but the files are all corrupt and won't open in any editor.

I thought that Microsoft's "movie maker" software would allow you to do that...not sure though. I can try it on my computer when I get home.

Funny story though.

Give this a try:

Use File => Open and select the avi file you want to capture from and playback the avi file using the VCR-like controls at the bottom.

When you hit the frame you want to capture, hit F8 to capture it and save it as an image file.

Scroll the format type and select the type of file you want it saved as from the list.

it turns out that movie maker will do exactly what i need. it figures that that answer has been sitting right under my nose the whole time. in fact, after i get done pulling stills, i'm going to play with all of his avi's and put together a vcd for him. do some fades with his shots, put in some background music and such. then i'm going to take all the shots of his feet and string them together too!
