Default Terraserver - downloading aerial photos to reference for fishing locations

Here's a useful tool if you're trying to explain to someone where to meet up or what not on the water or land for that matter...

http://terraserver-usa.com/

One of items on this server is an archive of aerial photos of the US. You can go to an area - zoom in accordingly and click the download button at the top of the page which will take you to a page that will present a single image(vs the tiled image). Right click on the image and select 'save picture as'(in IE) and save the image locally for use/editing. To add to the image - edit it with a your image editing program of choice to crop it, add text and lines, etc and then send it or post it on the web, whatever.

You can also use the image on terraserver's page by right clicking and using the URL as the image source for posting on message boards - however you won't have your custom image with text and such... this works with other images on the web as well.

Such as...

...that I used here.

I added the USGS tag to give credit where credit's due. Also - the FAQ states, "The images on TerraServer from the USGS are free for download and distribution. "

P.S. - http://www.topozone.com/ is also a great reference/tool.

StinkyH, I recall seeing somewhere in the ifish picture posting instructions that you aren't supposed to link to pictures on other websites without the permission of that website. Might want to double check on that. You can always save them to your harddrive, then upload them to ifish and use that for your post.

BTW, I think this is very fishing-related. You can get all sorts of good info and insight from aerials, from access points to channel structure. If it's a good year and the salmon are 5-6 salt fish, sometimes you can see them in the photos as well

I wish that the photos were more recent. Most I come across are from the mid to early 90s. Better than nothing though! So I am there checking them out.

StinkyH,

You can also get them from Mapquest. Put in an address and you'll see a "Aerial Photo" tab if one is avaiable.

Kind of neat to plug in your house and see the aerial photo.
