Default Spielberg/Hanks again!!

Im sure some of you have heard, but. The duo is bringing us another war epic, this time in the Pacific theater. It is reported to be a fictionalized saga, but im sure it will be, without a doubt, historically accurate. i cant wait.

That's very cool news! link

Saving Private Ryan is on my top 5 list next to the HBO Band of Brothers series by Spielberg & Hanks.

I scored the BoB DVD set last xmas. Kick arse - if you like SPR and haven't seen BoB - rent them/buy it - you won't be disappointed. Very well done... in my opinion.

P.S. - this could be cool also...

A fourth Indiana Jones movie will be great Let's keep our fingers crossed that George Lucas will not screw it up the way he did with the first two Star Wars prequels

<font size="2" face="verdana,arial,helvetica">...or temple of doom. That sucked compared to Raiders or Crusade.

I'd like to see Jar Jar Binks get quartered in Episode 3.

I hate to bring this into the thread, but Harrison Ford recently personally gave an award to Roman Polanski. Polanskis been convicted of child **** and hasent set foot in the US for 20+ years, fearing a prison sentence. The details are sick, its Hollywood gluttany at its worst. I lost respect for Ford after that.

Awesome!!

I'm a military history freak, and I have just about every major war movie on DVD or VHS. I went to see Saving Private Ryan when it was released. I was expecting a good movie, but that left me with my jaw hanging to the floor. Top-notch authenticity, historical accuracy, and unbelievable action sequences. Spielberg really outdid himself. I always thought he was good, but after that one he's been elevated to mythical status in my mind. Finally, a director/producer who knows how to make a real war movie. Band of Brothers was a great encore.

IMHO, the Pacific theater in WWII hasn't gotten the attention that it deserves. There are many, many stories from that part of the war that need to be told, especially from the Philippines, the Solomon Islands, China, and New Guinea.
Nobody better than Spielberg to tell it like it was.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">The meat grinder Tarawa. Id love to see a movie about Tarawa. Arguably the deadliest battle of the war, in its short but high casualty rate. Approx. a thousand dead(US) in less than three days. Or the defense of Wake. Or Saipan where 29,000 Japanese and 3000+ US were killed in 24 days of fighting. Mind boggling.

I think something about Iwo Jima would be cool too.
I've talked to a few vets who were there and it sounded like pure hell.

The Sands of Iwo Jima with John Wayne was set in both Tarawa and Iwo. But it was made in 1945 (I think). It would be a good candidate for a remake.

What I like about Spielberg's work is that he doesn't sanitize anything. He makes war look like what it is- impersonal, ruthless, callous, wasteful and brutal.
It will be interesting to see if he includes the events that people really don't want to see- like the cornered Japanese civilians (including women and children) on Saipan stabbing each other and jumping off cliffs to avoid being captured, or the Marines and Army rolling barrels of burning gasoline into caves on Okinawa and incinerating the soldiers and civilians hiding there, or Japanese officers disemboweling themselves after losing a battle on Guadalcanal.
A lot of people are critical of the U.S. for using nuclear weapons to end the war. But after 3-1/2 years of Japanese atrocities, their refusal to honor the Geneva convention or any rules of war, and their absolute refusal to surrender no matter how hopeless their situation, we had no choice.

Tell the story, Spielberg.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">I second that. I read that there were vets that went to see this in the theater that praised Spielberg for just that - the fact that he showed it like it was. I heard people complain about how gory and bloody it was - well what do they think war is like?

My dad is a WWII Navy vet. I knew where he served, but he never talked about what he actually did. I watched a show about WWII and they had some vets talking about what they did. There was one guy interviewed that did what my Dad did. I now understand even more so, why Dad is quiet about it.

These acurate tellings of history are important to us as Americans.

I have a customer who drove one of the landing craft in the Pacific. He doesn't talk about it.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">I hear ya StinkyH! I caught the whole BOB season last year when it played on HBO...VERY WELL DONE!! Seems like Spielberg/Hanks is becoming a well-known duo associated with war movies and mini-series! And, YES, they show it like it is!! War isn't a pretty picture, and Spielberg/Hanks don't try to hide it!...they just tell it like it is!
