Re: Arnold is in
Well it's not the first time Californians have elected a bad actor as governor. At least this bad actor can't run for president.
Former California governor quote "Win one for the Gipper|"
New California governor quote "Win one for the Groper"

Re: Arnold is in
I wouldn't call Arnold a bad actor. He's no Al Pacino, but I like what he does in flims. He was terrific in 'True Lies'. And his $30 million per filn price tag shows that he does something right.
I think he should be given the benefit of the doubt and see what he can do. California's economy is a mess. If he can turn it around, I'll tip my hat to him.

The people have spoken. I think the last minute sleazy attack ads hurt Davis. Now call the movers Gray.

Re: Arnold is in
Looks pretty close...
with 19% reporting:
Schwarzenegger....1,012,890 51%
Bustamante...............602,674 30%
McClintock..................246,482 12%
Camejo........................36,541 2%
Huffington....................24,421 1%
Ueberroth.......................8,598 0%
It drops of pretty fast from here.
There is still plenty of time for votes to change since only 19% have reported in.

Re: Arnold is in
I liked True Lies. I thought that was a good film, probably his best. Unfortunately, his acting brought him such name recongition that nobody else stood a chance. I wouldn't have voted for him, given his interview with Oui magazine, and the statements about sexual harrassment that I thought sounded pretty credible. If it was wrong for Clinton, it's wrong for Arnie. But, if he can save California from what ails it, it doesn't matter what I think, and so much the better. And even if he can't, it still doesn't matter what I think. I wish him well.

Count my vote for Jenna!
Arnold won't permit his wife or his mother to wear pants in his presence. Has to be skirts or dresses.
And this chauvinist control freak is going to be governor? He hasn't made one coherent statement about his intentions since he announced his candidacy.
California is going to choke on this one. Next will be Bruce Willis and Jean-Claude Van Damme running for the Senate.

Wake up, Ah-nold. This is real. Better get Jesse Ventura on the phone.
I've been convinced for years that the average person (voter) can't make the distinction between reality and tv/movies. This farce just reinforces my conviction.
And I don't care that he's a huge box office draw and makes big bucks per film. He still can't act. I liked the Terminator movies and Kindergarden Cop was cute, but the guy isn't an actor. We won't see him competing for an Oscar against Tom Hanks or Kevin Spacey anytime soon.

My favorite Arnold line.
"Gray Davis took a $50B surplus and turned it into a $50B deficit and deserves to be turned out of office"
I wonder if he got that line from Karl Rove?

There are plenty of things to attack any one for .
Being an actor , being a politician, being lazy, on and on. But I personally am glad to see the people still have the power and not the politicians . Im glad to see the Democratic process as intended by the founders . Though they couldnt imagine the amount of cash it takes to win. Hi Ho. id. painter

Stew,
All the analysts are looking for the lesson.
Let's see, incumbent who turned Surplus into big Deficit and saw big loss of jobs is defeated by pro-choice, pro-gay rights, pro-affirmative action candidate in groundswell of popular support.
OK...I'm good with that <grin>.

Re: Arnold is in
Ronald Reagan was the best governor California ever had. I believe that fact helped Arnold tremendously to get elected, even if he can't someday be president because of where he was born. He must be better than that wimp who was recalled - Davis just screams "pocket protector". I'm glad Arnold "Terminated" him!
And yes, Stew - I believe you when you say people can't tell the difference between reality and movies. I heard a woman on the radio today who said "I voted for Arnold because if he can take all those kids in Kindergarten Cop and straighten them out, then he'll be great at straightening out California." Give me a break!

Re: Arnold is in
I don't have a beef with the people of "Kaleefornea" being disatisfied with Davis. They followed due process and recalled him. What get's me is Arnold got in there without stating his position on anything! He obviously has no plan to turn the state around. This seems like an example change for the sake of change to me and that concept is wrong. Arnold had big name recognition and no experience and the gullible folks of California fell for it.
KT I lived in Calif. when Ronald Rayguns was governor and he did a lousy job. Never could understand the myth surrounding Reagan

Re: Arnold is in
I gotta chime in on this one-I live here in CA!
I voted for Arnold. I voted to recall Gray Davis.
As mentioned by someone, Davis took the position as Governor 5 years ago. The state had so much money that we all got state refund checks. New programs were started. California has a HUGE gross domestic product, so much that if CA were a country, it would have the 6th largest GDP in the world. CA contributes more to the national economy that any other state. Davis takes office as the national economy is turning downward, which is not his fault or responsibility. It is, however, his responsibility to recognize the downturn and plan for it. Davis increased state spending while state income fell dramatically. Davis "cooked the books" when running for his second term. Now, we have a $36 billion dollar deficit. For comparison purposes, that is more than every other states (except NY) total budget! California basically has to remove the economy of several states! That is all the teachers, firemen, cops, prisons, welfare, schools, maintenance, everything!
Ever wonder what $36B looks like? Imagine a stack of $100 dollar bills, totaling $1 million. It stands about 1 foot tall. $1 billion dollars in $100 bills would be as tall as a 90 story building (1,000 feet). Now put 36 of those buildings on a block, each with $100 bills stacked up next to it, and you can imagine $36 billion dollars.
That is a lot of money (unless you work for the Federal Government).
Arnold, even if he blows it, could not do worse. He has surrounded himself with talent. Arnold knows he is not experienced, he will listen to his advisors, unlike Davis who was only concerned about his career and image.
I am tired of politics as usual. I am so glad that Davis is gone. He can take Barbara Boxer, Diane Feinstein, and Arianna Huffington with him! You can say whatever you want about Arnold, like him or not. Do NOT say Arnold did not say his position on anything, as "Stew" says in his post above. Maybe you do not get the news we get, but he gave his position on enough items for me (Indian casinos not paying taxes, abortion, illegals getting drivers licenses, taxes, vehicle license fees). It is true we do not know where the cuts will come from, but at least he has promised a 60 day audit of the books. Anyone out there work for the government? You know exactly what I am talking about.
I have not heard that Arnold will not let his wife or mother wear pants, as alleged by 1pump. I challenge that. Arnold spends a fortune on his wardrobe (and it shows), so I imagine his family does to.
To sum it all up, I figure that as a Californian, I have nothing to lose. I know that I do not like politics as usual, so when someone can stand up to the special interest groups, I vote. When someone says it is time to clean house, I vote. When someone agrees that I pay too much in taxes, I vote.
I could go on lots more, but I guess I will wait for some responses to this long post.

Re: Arnold is in
Empire,
As you noted, there is information that your or others in Cal. may have that we don't and that information helps form you opinions.
That can work both ways.
Here in Oregon we were told by the Republican party not to approve Measure 28, a funding package for increased revenue. We were told they couldn't tell us what would have to be cut but, just like Arnold, the budget could indeed be cut to meet the amount of revenue at hand.
It did not happen.
We are currently being told by some Republicans to overturn the proposed income tax surcharge as "we don't need it" and there are cuts to be made that people will accept. Again, they say they can't tell us what those are.
So, as you can see, the record for being told there are cuts to be made that won't create undue hardship, without revealing what those cuts actually would be, is darn poor in Oregon.
The weight is now on the Governator and his followers to deliver. I sincerely hope this is a good move for California and that he turns it all around. However, once again, the track record for "secret" plans to adequatetly fund the services people need and demand is not good at this time in history.
Dan S,
Very good point........... it is as if history has led to a turn over in philosophy of the two parties. Tom McCall is likely spinning in his grave in relation to what has happened to the Republican party, especially in Oregon. :depressed:

Tell ya what happened to the GOP! They have let people like Rush, Lars,Sean, O'Reilley and the worst of all Tom DeLay become their mouthpiece. There are many honarable republicans past and present like Eisenhower, Tom McCall,John McCain,Mark Hatfield,Gerald Ford and Bob Dole. These men didn't need to use hate and fear to get their message across like alot of the GOP today. You might disagree with them but they never resorted to these tactics.
Yes I know before you even say it! The democrats have their fanatics too but when is the last time you heard one of them wish a deadly disease upon someone who merely disagreed with them.
I firmly believe that too many talking heads have too much influence on public opinion. That's why so many "righties" on here sound alike.
Like I've said before turn off the radio and read George Will. He can get his conservative message across without the hate.
