Default First Honda Outboard I need advice

Just bought a 2006 Honda 20 HP motor for a motor upgrade on my 14 ft Sea Nymph. I have a 1994 Yamaha 25 HP 2 stroke on there now but went with the 20 HP as it is close to the same weight as the Yamaha. So with this I have some all new questions for you Honda guys.

#1 Honda only oil and gear lube or is other brands of oil ok that meet ratings? Also regular or synthetic in both engine and gear case? How often do you change both motor and gear case?
#2 Is ethanol a problem with Honda like it is with Yamaha? Do you recomend marine stable ethanol treatment? In every tank or just off season?
#3 When would you think about the first water pump replacement?

The above and any other tips would be great
Cant wait to test it out this weekend!!!!

Thanks DC

Any oil that meets the manufacturers requirements is fine, synthetic or not, even for new engine warranty requirements. I change my gear oil every 50 hours or so, but that comes quickly on my boat, and is more or less just to make sure water isn't getting in.

Ethanol is the most frequently blamed problem with fuel issues, and that may or may not be the case. Much of the time it's not. Your owners manual will tell you what fuel is acceptable with your engine. Very few engine manufacturers exclude ethanol blends as acceptable fuel.

I replace impellers every year. They are cheap as dirt and easy to change. Your owners manual will also include recommended intervals for that as well. Sand is really hard on them, if you run into the hard deck regularly, change them more often.

Rock guard that mount on the skag will save you about $100.00.

I have a '93 15hp that I bought new. The only thing I have ever needed to change was the spark plugs. I have Amsoil in the crankcase and lower unit but I wouldnt recommend doing that until you have run it about 20-30 hours or so for good fit and finish. I put Stabil in the tank and have no problems with fuel. Maybe I have been lucky but I have never had an issue with my Hondas.
