Picture taking ???
When you take a picture, with the intention of posting it here, how do you know that the size will be with in the 100kb limit. I have one that I took and it is 156kb and I can't figure out how to reduce the size. I have HP Photo Printing program and a HP C200 camera. The camera does have a resolution adjustment, where I can put either 17 or 40 or 80 pics on the 8mb card. Am I even in the ballpark? I would really like to be able to contribute more to ifish in the way of posts and pics. Thanks in advance.

Re: Picture taking ???
Open the picture in Microsoft Paint...then select Image/Stretch Skew, and play around with the %'s (changing in equal increments)....this will help you get it below the 100 mark.

Re: Picture taking ???
Seafood Man,
I don't have the HP Photo program, but I have several others. Try opening the photo in HP, then click the menu item "File", then "Save As" and look at the options it gives you. Many photo programs let you save the photo for email or the web. This is a lower resolution and will probably come under the 100K limit. If you can't find it in the "File" menu, look in the "Edit" menu. I'm sure other iFishers use HP Photo and will be able to give you better directions.
Good Luck

Re: Picture taking ???
Lots of us use a free program called Irfanview. You can do a google search for their website and download it. It's easy to resize to the 450 width and then save it at about 45% quality. That's what I use and my pics seem to be acceptable quality and they upload without a problem.
Give me a holler if you have trouble and I'll try to help.

Re: Picture taking ???
Another thing to check is the compression setting on your camera. This will affect the quality of your images as well as the number of images you can take on a given flash card size.
Some graphics programs have this setting as well when you open an image and go to save it(.jpg typically) - Paint Shop Pro has an options button on the save dialoge box that pops up when you select 'save as' and you can increase the compression there on a slider bar - but at the price of image quality. Depending on what the image is of - the compression can make a big or little difference in the image quality. Also see if your image program has a crop feature - trimming the unwanted edges of an image can help you with your file size too.
Personally - I take the highest resolution/least compressed images and keep them on my computer - then edit accordingly for posting on the web or sending out. That way - if I really like a pic and want to print it out at a later time I have a quality image to work with. Flash cards have really come down in price too so it's easier to have the capacity to hold the high res/high quality images without having to lower the number of images you're able to take with a smaller card.

Re: Picture taking ???
Simply saving as a JPG vs a GIF or TIF will reduce the file size too.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">.gif is also limited to 256 colors - does not work too well for photos whereas .jpg is 16 million.
Here's a page on the different formats fwiw - image formats.
Here's an example of the loss that can be caused by raising the compression rate on a .jpg...
15% compression - file size 7kB
85% compression - file size 2.2kB
Hope that sheds some light.

Re: Picture taking ???
The Nikon phototransfer program gives you an option to change the compression at time of download. I get best results by taking the picture at fine resolution (which gives the largest file size) and then using either the transfer program or more often, photoshop to reduce the resolution as needed.
