Telemarketers that lost their job due to the no call list. Don't you feel for them??
Any suggestions for the caption?

Re: Makes me so sad I could cry........laughing..
I know it's annoying, but put yourself in their shoes. People make it sound like telemarketers are TRYING too annoy everyone. NEWS FLASH: IT'S THEIR JOB! In fact, they probably don't like it, just like many of us don't like our jobs. Would you like to be annoying everyone, everyday? Probably not, but if it paid the bills and fed your family.... All I'm saying is that it's probably not that funny for the telemarketers AND THEIR FAMILIES. Good for you, you guys lucked out and got a "good" job and can sit back and laugh at other peoples problems, but seriously, even if you're happy about it, you could show a little compassion, maybe even some sympathy. What a revolutionary idea, huh? Sometimes you guys are unbelievable. Oh yeah, have a nice dinner. Please.

Why are they loseing there jobs?? None of the no-calls list are enforced yet, and it may be a while before they decide whether they can even legally block the telemarketersersersersers..

Re: Makes me so sad I could cry........laughing..
I have no sympathy for telemarketers. I have no sympathy for people who profit from conning me out of a dollar. Yes profit. Yes con. I profit from my labor. Telemarketers are trained to turn a "no" into a "yes". It's a con that prays on people that are polite. It's taken me 37 years to learn to hang up on them..........no sympathy.
It sucks for anyone to lose a job, but just because someone will pay you a dollar and it is not yet illegal, doesn't mean it's respectable.
Whooooobuddy telemarketers get my goat!

Whenever a bill is signed into law somebody wins, and somebody loses. It's always been that way. Endangered Species Act? Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area? Child labor laws? Motor Carrier Act?
The telemarketers can get in line behind everybody else. Rest assured the line will get longer every time a new law hits the books.

Re: Makes me so sad I could cry........laughing..
Steelhead, come on man, lighten up a little. Of course I don't wish bad on anyone, even telemarketers. And I know they are just doing their job. However, if they didn't get something from it, they wouldn't do it, and I don't buy that it's the only job they could find, if so, that's even sadder. Until I joined the Oregon No Call list I was getting constant calls from these winners, and 75% of them were rude, pushy, and blatantly broke the laws regarding how they could conduct their business. The remaining 25% I either listened to, or politely declined, but I treated them fine. If telemarketing is such an upstanding business, why have we had to PAY to get off of their lists? Shouldn't they have to pay US for the privelage of annoying us?
Sorry, do I want a bread winner out of work and their family at risk. Hell no. Am I glad they won't be calling me asking for the bread. UNBELIEVABLY SO!!!!
And I didn't "luck out and get a good job". Luck had absolutely nothing to do with my job, thank you very much.

Re: Makes me so sad I could cry........laughing..
The arguement that the telemarketing industry is going to lose x million jobs as a result of the do not call list does not make sense to me.
Presumably the 50 million entries onto the list are from people who don't want to be called, and I think it is safe to say, would not purchase anything over the phone to begin with.
If my above assumptions are correct then the Do Not Call List actually would help telemarketing firms become more profitable as they should see an increase in sales and a decrease in costs per sale. (fewer calls per sale)

Re: Makes me so sad I could cry........laughing..
If no one bought from telemarketers it would not be a profitable way for businesses to do business and there would be none.
I am not defending them. I an just pointing out that only because it works, and works profitably, does it take place.
It is kind of like bad TV. We can point out how terrible it is but as long as it is getting public support it will continue.
BTW, I have succesfully used 7 simple words and reduced my interuptions significantly. The second you deterimine you are being solicited simply say, "Please remove me from your call list". This has worked well for me although I at times get frustrated and admit to dressing the the phrase up a bit with adjectives.......

Re: Makes me so sad I could cry........laughing..
Here's how I deal with them at my house...........
Most national telemarketers are on auto-dialers, once you pick up your phone it takes approxitamely three seconds for their ssytem to connect your with a person. When I say hello, if I don't here a response back immediately I just hang up. My phones also have a screen which will tell me if the call is from someone I have programmed into my phone or will list the number if they are not, most telemarketers come on as 'out of area' so I pretty much know in advance.
I do agree though, it's a pain in the backside.

Re: Makes me so sad I could cry........laughing..
Something that worked for me in the past was to tell them the line was a business number and they were quick to apologize and then I'd tell them to hang on a sec and confirm that they'd take my number off their list... other times I'd either hang up on them or say a few choice words. It's frustrating when you're enjoying a movie, eating dinner or the like and the phone rings with some solicitation. They wonder why they get some choice words? That's my time! I work all day and I want to come home and spend my time like I want to - not talking to some schmuck about long distance or new siding on my house. If they don't like the flak they get with the job - get used to it or change jobs. I didn't force them to take the job - they shouldn't expect me to be happy when I answer the phone for them.
Regarding them losing their jobs - it sucks, especially with the job market out there.

Re: Makes me so sad I could cry........laughing..
All this bad talk about telemarketers....what about SPAM, TV commercials, and junk mail? If you get rid of one, shouldn't we get rid of all of them? What about door to door salespeople? It is very simple. If you don't want to talk with them, shut the door or simply hang up! I cannot believe how some people are getting so worked up over this issue! I cannot believe the Federal Government is getting involved in such a petty issue!
Trust me. I don't like to be bothered while spending time with my family either.....I certainly don't get stressed out about it though. I have too many other things to worry about (river levels, fish counts, tides  , etc.).

Re: Makes me so sad I could cry........laughing..
Many years ago, when I was in dire staits and needing a job, I went to work for a national polling company. Granted it was not telemarketing, but I imagine similar in many ways. It was just about the least enjoyable experience of my life, pressure to move through the list, pressure to get so many complete questionairres, and a massive rejection rate. It was so negative I lasted only about 6 weeks. Needless to say since then I am polite to most of those folks who were/are desparate for a job.
Just my experience...

Hooker,
I agree that spam and junk mail need to go too, but TV commercials are the price you pay for "free" broadcasts.

Re: Makes me so sad I could cry........laughing..
Hooker, yeah, they should probably be banned too.
As for telemarketers, as I have said, I am polite when I tell them I am not interested. However, getting 4-5 calls per night, every night is not the same as seeing commercials on TV. I can turn the TV off. Turning the telephone off should not be necessary. The ones that really burned me were the ones that kept pushing after I said no. For one, it's illegal to do so in Oregon. We are a "no rebuttal" state. You say no, they hang up, end of story. Second, all you are going to do by trying to talk me into something I have already declined is **** me off. There are two ways a telemarketer call is going to end if I'm on the receiving end. The telemarketer is going to say "OK, thank you for your time. If you change your mind, contact us at ......", then hang up, or I'm going to cuss at them and then I'm going to hang up. Period. They have the choice for option number one, but 75% of them seem to have always chosen option number two.

Caller ID and voice mail are wonderful things. If I don't recognize the number, I don't answer. Period. They can make their pitch to my voice mail. It's far more polite than I am, anyway.

I like to just set the phone down and let them ramble. They don't call back.
At work forceful unsolicited cold callers are asked to "Hold Please" the record is 5 minutes so far. They don't tend to call back either.
No sympathy from me.

when you call my house, you get the answering machine. if you know me, you know to talk to the answering machine and i'll pick up. i've never had a telemarketer leave me a message. i do however get prerecorded messages. i love my new digital answering machine. i can skip right past those. on the rare occasion that i do answer the phone and someone is trying to sell me stuff, i just give them grief until they give up.

Re: Makes me so sad I could cry........laughing..
We got a tele-zapper when they first came out and it has dramatically reduced the # of telemarketers who call. I loaned it to my Grandmother who was constantly getting nagged by these folks and in 3 weeks she was call free.
My wife will sometimes wait until they finally come on the line and tell them she was interested in the product that she was pitched, ( not really a product pitched, she lied to them) and would they play the pitch back again and it leaves them all confused and they don't know what product was the last one. Then they hang up.
We love to play with their heads but who has the time when the food is hot?

Re: Makes me so sad I could cry........laughing..
ampersat, I'm with you as far as telemarketers go!
I don't understand how on one hand people scream about too much government in our lives and then so many are happy that the gov. is going to dictate who can or cannot call a person.
I'd be curious to know how many people that are for the no-call law have an answering machine, ringer on/off switch, call waiting, caller ID, call forwarding etc., some options that they pay a monthly fee for. Heck, I don't understand why people have an answering machine AND caller ID, if they leave a message you know who it is...if they don't who cares!
In my house the cordless phone sits at the table durring dinner, if it rings I let the answering machine get it, then I decide if it's a call I will take or wait 'till after dinner, EASY! No government needed. Most days I let the maching get the calls between 4:00PM and 8:00PM anyway.
