Default 2000 Sportjet Starter

Does anyone know if there is an after market starter for the SJ? I am on my third one and don't want to spend the $ on a new Merc one

Thx
Slim

They sell rebuild kits for them. I rebuilt mine for like 30 bucks a couple of years ago. It's still going strong.

Yup exactly. Merc mentions a special tool needed in their shop manuals, but I did mine without one. A very easy job. Should take about 15 or 20 minutes with ordinary tools. Have compressed air and some brake or carburetor cleaner on hand. Just like an automotive starter, you may need a helper to drop the armature in while you hold the brushes open too.

Be sure to use marine anti-seize.

I bring the following up because your boat may be down (which may be for a couple of days). The long thin "bolts" that hold the starter together may be corroded. If they are and you break one or both by taking it apart you'll simply need new ones. The worse case scenario is you'll need to order new ones from Merc or if you are really lucky maybe NAPA or Fastenal has something that will work in their place and in stock.
